People who are trying to paint Lynyrd Skynyrd and Ronnie Van Zant as racist rednecks have obviously never listened to the music. They (he) transcended the southern culture of the time and wrote about social issues in a way that even the racist rednecks listened. For example;
Needle And Spoon was a commentary on the scourge of drug abuse.
Saturday Night Special was about gun violence.
The Ballad of Curtis Loew was about racism.
I could go on an on. Sure they wrote and performed some redneck drinking songs, but I challenge anyone to point to a song that was racist or any other social ill.

Yep, and unlike some others (I’m looking at you, Neil Young), they did it without being preachy or self-righteous.
