The entire thing, including the shooting, was orchestrated by aliens. Think about this for a moment. It's been known for quite some time that aliens are at Area 51, which is nearby Las Vegas. This even made it into a major motion picture, Independence Day.
Clearly the aliens decided enough was enough and have been engaged in a campaign of distraction to make us forget about them. And it's worked. Nobody talks about it anymore.
