It is nearly constant flashing in our backyard right now. This is the most fireflies I've seen in many years here in North AL. Pretty cool to see this many after people were saying they saw very few last year.

I think they like afternoon rain and coming out into the moist evening.

Zone8 in ATL metro here.

Despite the fact we spray for mosquitoes, we still have plenty of lightning bugs in our backyard the last few days.

Absolutely love seeing them.

I didn't know until not long ago that they're technically beetles

Used to be plentiful in southeastern Louisiana. Haven't one in so long. Miss seeing them light it up on quiet nights.

Yep, and there are several different species that all time their emergence and mating at different times. The earliest you'll see are Spring Treetoppers. You'll usually just catch sight of them flashing high in the trees in early Spring. They're the only ones out then. Right now, for us, it is mostly the Common Eastern Firefly.

A few years ago I was turning my compost after dark and noticed glowing worms. Turns out they are lightning bug larvae. I had no idea the larvae live in soil and also glow.

Haven't seen any here yet in arkansas but there was quite a few last year

I am seeing more than I have seen in a long time here in Covington.

I’ve had a couple hanging around this week as well. The mosquito sprayed usually wipe them out

They were helping you out, eating pests that may have found their way into your compost. They're voracious predators of quite a few different garden pests.

Glow worms turn into a cross between a lightning bug and a reindeer:

I saw one on the porch earlier this year, but didn't get any good pics of it really.

Same. Upstate SC. I did a test last night to see how many I could see flashing in just a second or two without moving my head. It was like 10, and my view wasn’t that deep due to wall of trees.

Last time I saw one was 10+ year ago in Gatlinburg. They say all the spraying for mosquitos have pretty much wiped them out in Southern Louisiana

Great to hear

Brings back memories of the care free days at mamaw's house when we waited till dark with a mason jar and a lid, we would catch them and admire them lighting the jar up.

Then set them free
