Men wore hats all the time because their hair was greasy and looked like garbage. Now that even poor people can afford to wash their shite every day, hats became less necessary. JFK made the hatless look mainstream.

It's an interesting idea, my thing is since when did the fedora become so hated? I'll admit I haven't had one most of my life but I did buy one that I liked 2 years ago. I don't wear it a lot but every now and then. Here in Florida hats are absolutely necessary in the summer months and I feel like you get more protection from a fedora than a ball cap. I've truly never been a ball cap person.
