If you go the the SPCA right now, the majority of the dogs are labeled as American Staffordshire Terriers or AmStaff mixes. Maybe it's an actual breed, but it's also just what people call pit bulls to make it sound more tame.

EDIT: But something also to keep in mind is that pit bull isn't an actual breed. It's just the general name given to any dog that has a background of being bred for dogfighting, and it's the name that the news uses whenever there is an aggressive dog that attacks someone.

Really like most dogs. Grew up with Doberman's, so I never have been afraid of them. Used to not like little dogs, but like most, after being around a few. Feel sorry for the ones who's owners put sweaters, and tees, on them. Feel sorry for Poddles too.

Common term for people who obviously know very little about dogs.

I know pit bulls are trash dogs that are prone to mauling other animals and people and that the people that defend or own a pit bull are generally also trashy

Irish Setters. Got my first one while at LSU in the early seventies. Have had at least one (as many as 4 at one time) ever since. Great dogs.

English shepherd

Great choice. We had one when the kids were 5/6 or so to 13/14. She actually shepherded them, yanking them away from a ditch that ran from some swampy property behind ours to a creek near the front of our property. It was a moccasin highway. She could always tell when they were around and she placed herself between the kids playing and the snake's location, changing her position as the snake moved.

I didn't at first realize what she was doing until one time she ran down my youngest son running to get an overthrown baseball. She caught him drug him down and was dragging him back to the center of the yard. I was running towards them with my carry piece to shoot her if I had to. But my kid wasn't scared, she was just hanging on to his pants and when she let go she kept looking towards the ditch and was agitated and barking. She almost never barked at anything. So I mosied over that way and saw the moc and shot it.

Apparently all the previous times she had moved herself between my kids and herself, sometimes bumping them back to the yard was because she knew snakes were in the ditch at the time. I taught her to bark at their presence all the time by using the ones I shot.

She was fabulous and had only one real vice. She loved digging in the cool earth of our flower beds.

Cool dogs but not for kids. They are snppy and aloof. They aren't very big so they can't handle kids jumping all over them and wrestling with them.

They are considered one of the "wild" or "ancient" breeds.

Same shite being talked about Pits today were said about other breeds of dogs mentioned ITT in the past...

1970's - Doberman
1980's German Shepherd
1990's - Rotties
2000's - Pit type breeds, although the Staffy and AmStaff had the viciousness bred out of them a long time ago

When the trash of the earth move on to another breed to frick over the horrible Pit Bull will become the loved animal that it should be just like these other breeds.

It is funny, too, that one thing all of the above breeds have in common other than maybe the Doberman is if you go look them up on the AKC website you will be told that they are all one of the best family dogs you can own (Staffy's since pit isn't a registered breed but used to be on the AKC website).

Irish Setters

First dog I ever had was an Irish Setter. Name was 'Sir Sam of Hampton' (lived on Hampton Rd.) Got him for my 4th birthday and had him until I was 12. We moved to a house that didn't have a fenced in yard so I gave him to family friend that owned a huge farm so he would have plenty of room to run.

That's a false and stupid narrative. The American Pitbull Terrier (APBT) has been a recognized breed since the late 1800's. Many other breeds are mislabeled as "pitbull" bc it makes a good story but they're not at all the same thing.

American Staffordshire Terriers were once the same breed as APBT until the AKC decided a name change was needed to move away from the fighting legacy. Those akc registered dogs eventually had most of the fighting nature bred out of them.

It also can't be stated enough that dogs from actual fighting bloodlines, at least the old lines, are some of the least likely dogs to ever show human aggression. That trait was absolutely not tolerated and human aggressive dogs were removed from the gene pool.

Most people choose not to educate themselves on topics they like this, and would rather spew the nonsense they hear on tv. Funny bc these same people talk about how ignorant it is to listen to the news media when it's a story they disagree with.

My family has always had Boston Terriers. I lost mine to old age almost 2 years ago and still miss him dearly.
