Ways to Keep House Cool & Not Have to Run AC All Day

We know its hotter than two rats in a wool sock fricking in a pepper patch so that that means the AC runs most of the day. Today I am home so since this morning I set the AC to 78, but every once in awhile I will turn it down for a little while to keep cool air flowing. I leave all the blinds close. There is a front window in which the curtains are always open during the day, but I don't have them completely open.
Well there is one window in the office area in which I keep the blinds open and use the sunlight and pretty much keep all the lights off in the house. Does anyone do this? When I say this I mean, try to preserve running the AC all day on really hot days by doing whatever you can to keep it cool?

I really don't worry about it. It may save what $100-150 bucks a month making yourself uncomfortable at 78 degrees?

I know, but its something about keeping the AC running. For some reason I worry it will stop working at some point if it keeps running, so it has more to do with not wanting to running it all the time.

78 isn't all that warm to me. I like it cool for shower time, but can have it at upper 70's the rest of the day.

78 is a living hell.
It is currently still under 65 in the house from last night.
The AC will kick on at 71.
Electric bill is under 140 a month...so who gives a shite. If it was 500+ I might care.

The front of our house faces west but we have trees to block the setting sun. Our problem was the back yard and the rising sun. So I have four of theseon our back patio awning and I put some Gila window film on the windows on the back of the house. Both of these helped tremendously.
My thermostat is set at 72 at night but set to 79 at 7:00am. If I'm home at lunch during the summer, it's usually around 74-75 degrees in the house. Sometimes the AC will have to kick on around 3 or 4 to keep it at 79. At 5:30 the thermostat switches to 75, then 72 at 7:00.

They make black out shades that are thick and will help with insulation. You can also buy thicker curtains as well. If you really want to make a difference, buy new windows.
Depending on how old your home is, you may need to look into having insulation blown into the walls, attic, etc.
If you have a basement, leave the door open or move your office down there.
If you have a multiple story house, forget it.
If your A/C is truly running all day, then it may have a leak or may be in need of replacement.

Blackout shades work...along with changing out the screens on your windows with 90% Solar Window Screen material.

What's up with 78 being the optimal degree? What's wrong with 76? To me it feels better and cheaper than 70-72 all day long.

Its 95 degrees outside and 90% humidity. You need magic to keep a house cool without running the AC.

Blackout curtains and a dehumidifier to help pull moisture out of the air in the house. Or if your cooling system has zones then just make the higher traffic areas more of a priority for cooling. You could also try to upgrade your home's insulation to better prevent hot air seeping in which will have cause the AC to run more often. It will benefit you in the winter as well.

No, maybe $25. It isn't really about saving the money as I said, I just don't like it running all day so in the morning I don't keep it running. On a day like today, I turned it back down at 11:30 and it will probably run all day. There is always 3 or 4 days during the summer when it does run all day just because it gets so hot. Before Gustav, I had three trees in the backyard, one was a huge oak tree that keep the sun from hitting one part of the house. The other two were pine trees (which didn't do much, but now I have some other type of oak tree and two crape myrtles.
Ever since the big tree was cut down there is an obvious difference.

Yeah, I guess this pretty much sums it up. Just have to deal with it.
