Went and saw Chinese comedian Jiaoying Summers at the Joy Theatre last night. Some quick observations:
Some comedian named Davey Jackson opened. He told jokes for about 15 minutes. I laughed a few times but well, there is a reason he only tells jokes for 15 minutes. My date noticed he was stealing some of his jokes from the internet.
Jiaoying Summers. Woman was stunning. Wore a strapless red dress.
Her act. This is the first time I've seen a comedian lose it on stage. I mean twice she got rattled mid joke and had to start the joke over.
She was taping this show for a comedy special. I was sitting in the front row. Next table over, this gay guy who flew from Milwaukee just to watch her, would not shut up. He kept on making comments to her during her routine. Obviously a fan but it threw her off - completely. Did I mention he was Iranian?
She finally stopped, chewed him out, told him to stop it, but when she tried to resume, she was flustered and had to restart the whole routine. That happened again. She couldn't seem to get on track so she walked down into the audience and started doing crowdwork.
She is great at crowd work and everyone laughed their asses off at her work. Then she returned to the stage and finished her routine. Show was about 45 minutes. She needs to expand her jokes. She's moving up from crowdwork to routines. Needs more stories and material.
One thing she didn't know, and the better ones such as Bill Burr do this when they come to New Orleans. They learn a little bit about the city and make jokes about it. Audience always eat it up. She didn't make any local jokes.
It's expected though. SHe's up and coming. It was worth a $30 ticket. Definitely wasn't worth $75. ;-).

Subtle disposable income brag.

Look, lard but, I entered several pictures addresses in the img slot. For some reason, just showing up as code instead of a picture. Did it last week to me on a YouTube embed also.

What about this story made you think it was worthy of a thread?

Is this a diary or something?

Yeah, because we definitely needed another left-lane driver thread.

Because he's an opener. A guy you liked would still only do 15 in that spot.

Doing local jokes isn't something unique to New Orleans. She's not going to do local jokes for a special. She's only going to put her most polished material on tape.
That being said, it looks like she only did one show on one night. That isn't the norm for a special. They normally film across multiple shows throughout a weekend to get the best jokes. All of her flustered parts would be edited out. She might have been filming to get clips, but I'm doubting it was for a full blown special.

I was wondering if any obscure female comedians had a bad outing recently

Did I sign up for a comic scouting service without realizing it?
