That's very cool. I hope to go through her one day. I've been on the USS Alabama and some other WWII era ships, but a metal ship that old is something else.

If you ever get to Philadelphia, go see the USS Olympia, She is even older, a cruiser who served in the Spanish American War and WWI. She was a very capable warship in her day and, unlike WWII-era ships, had some nods to comfort and earlier sailing ships.

Does anyone know who's undertaking the tow? Looks like a pretty good accompaniment of tow and tow assist.

Moran I believe

They should shell inner city Houston just to show the ship is still capable.

The original engines were the same steam engines as the Titanic.
Interesting claim, but can we get some evidence for that? Not saying it's wrong, but that would surprise me a bit. The design of the R.M.S. Titanic was optimized for more sustained higher-speed running; the design of the U.S.S. Texas, like those of most warships of that era, was optimized for relatively shorter bursts of speed with more economical operation over long distances.

Do we melt if they put it at the Kemah Boardwalk?

Yes. They’d cover her in multicolor LED strobes and charge you $40 to take a picture in front of her.

My wife (no pics) was actually just hired to help start the Education Dept on the Alabama. Very cool job and currently trying to get grants to really expand it. Very cool to see them teaching kids history on board a battleship!

That should be a fun gig. They do tons of activities over there for the Alabama. Always thought it was an awesome idea to engage the community. Hope she enjoys it.

Congratulations to your wife. That ought to be a very cool job. There's a lot to see there besides the battleship, not that she isn't impressive in her own right.

Yeah she is really enjoying it so far. The best part (for me at least) is I now get free admission and unlimited access to the ship to help her with her "research". Another cool "perk" is that employees and family can use the ship as a shelter in case of a hurricane. Not that we need a shelter but may have to find out what it's like to ride out a storm on a battleship

Their accommodations were rough there. Make ww2 and later ships look like cruise ships. Took a tour a few years back.

Not that ship but on others like the Intrepid it always amazed me when the housed Marines they intentionally made the Marines area a little rougher and shittier than the navy area. Like the bunks their heads and showers their mess areas all more spartan.

haha that would be cool. Are these ships somehow permanently anchored in place or just rigged up for a storm? Always wondered that.

I believe she is moored to the shore/bottom with permanent anchors and pilings

Will be heading down to Galveston this weekend in order to get a good look at her before they start the repairs. Should get a good view from Katie's or Fisherman's Wharf.
