And I wear a 550 dollar rolex milgauss because the damn thing is not worth 12000 brand new and I'm not waiting for a AD to put me on a waitlist for 5 years for one. I get the best of both worlds, I get the enjoy the design of my favorite watch style and not worry about banging it against a desk or having to stick it in a safe as an "investment". And I always have fun conversations with people who ask about it, i mention it's a SCG, and they're pretty blown away about how far clones have come in 30 years.
Edit: not to mention the mod scene is pretty crazy. I have a few seiko mods (one daytona and one patek philippe nautilus) and they've basically become my daily drivers. Watches shouldn't be a financial flex, more of a design and art flex if anything else. Or functional.

No, you don't. You are wearing a fake counterfeit.
We can argue the merits of "homage" watches or "mods" that resemble popular watches, but good people don't promote illegal fakes.

There's the guy in London who was stabbed to death for his Patek. It was a fake, but I guess the thugs needed to brush up on their counterfeit spotting.

I like the Seiko mini turtle. I wish I could find a Tag F1 that is no bigger than 41 mm and automatic.

I also like the Seiko mini tuna.
Yes, I have small wrists.

Ok, I’ll bite. Does your watch tickle you, pat you softly, or hold your hand in the rain? If not, that feeling you get is based on superiority, monetarily or otherwise, based on those around you. It’s why “fakes” exist.
Would you still like the way it makes you feel on a deserted island?

I'm looking for a tough, no-nonsense watch I can dress up with a steel bracelet or dress down with a rubber strap (which will probably be my go-to because I am on and in the water a lot). I would like an automatic or solar-powered watch so I do not have to purchase a battery. I also like the idea of a date window.

What you are looking for is what some people call a GADA (go anywhere do anything) or beach to boardroom watch. I usually approach this starting from the archetypes of the style which IMO are the Patek 5167 and the Rolex Oyster Perpetual. I don't know of any quality watches that take much inspiration from the 5167 so I will stick with the OP.
There are a ton of OP inspired watches because the OP has become a hot commodity in the last few years so there are "copies" from the very inexpensive "homage" watches you will find all over Amazon etc up to watches that cost essentially as much as the OP at retail.
Two that stand out to me at the lower end (but not a homage watch in my opinion) is a solar movement SNE039 from Seiko:
You can find them for well under $200
Next would be the Tissot Gentleman Powermatic 80 Silicium
$800 retail and can be found around $550 The Powermatic 80 is based on the ETA 2824 but has an 80 hour power reserve and has a silicon balance wheel.
Though it is time only the Tudor Black Bay 36/41 is available in multiple colorways and while over your budget Tudor is one of the best values in mid-tier watches... period. Roughly $3k but you might find a mint used one near your pricepoint.
One I will also throw in that is even more expensive but I am honestly not sure what discounts could be had but unless it is an SE (like the one below) it should be around the Tudor price... the Oris ProPilot X. I am showing the new Kermit edition which I am rather fond of but it is available in several really nice (and sedate) colorways.
There are tons of other watches that fit the criteria you have set and by tons, I do mean hundreds. I have stayed within a fairly narrow aesthetic again because I see the Rolex OP as the perfect watch for this switching between a bracelet and Rubber B or Everest rubber strap. If you want something more casual like a dive or GMT there are tons more options.
Something that struck me previewing the post to ensure the pictures posted it is funny the difference between the Seiko which is just a straight picture and the rest which have hours of retouching to the point of almost looking like renders but without any imperfections. There is a timelapse out there of the retouching of a Rolex ceramic Daytona and the lengths they went to are nuts.
