I would be willing to bet that this guy has killed himself already.

Mom is at fault. If you know he's mentally ill, wtf you letting the kids go without supervision?

Chances are it was court ordered. Based on the article, it appears he’s taken them before with no issues.

It says he picked them up at 5pm and she reported they weren't returned at 8pm.
So evidently he was only supposed to take them for 2ish hours.
Not as weird as if they were supposed to spend the night like everyone is insinuating.
You're right. I mean, he just lives in a car. What's wrong with living in a car and taking your kids out around in it?

My wife was reading this and telling me about it last night
frick this guy.
I have a feeling he's already offed himself or will when the walls close in. He'll take the easy way out like cowards do.

I realize this dude may have mental issues, but frick killing your children, man. That's the fricking worst thing you can do. I can't imagine the emotions the mother is going through.
Almost has to have some serious mental issues. No excuse at all but man we need to make more effort to identify and treat people for mental illnesses when they will allow....especially true of people who served in the military....its the least we can do for them. Right, left and center this is an issue that is incumbent upon all of us.....3 young lives snuffed out, another one ruined beyond any kind of redemption in this world and no telling how many family members and school mates and friends are going to be hard against it....damn.

Normally I am inclined to hope not but in this case it really is about as good an outcome as it gets

Correct. He is laying somewhere dead. Or maybe a grizzly got him for lunch.
