smart enough to step around/over a pile of crap.

hitchens was a smarmy, extremely pretentious, arrogant pile of crap that had no more idea of facts than fiction and sold his load of garbage to the libsters that ate it up. but I see why he appeals to the hippy boomers and their millennial brats that were told how bright, brilliant and beautiful they are when they have zero experience and no idea between their arse and a hole in the ground.

the only one in that group worth anything is sam harris who is ten times smarter than hitchens was and 100x less arrogant and assholish.

Another level? Another class?

What, you think he's the first God-deploring, work-hating, if it feels good do it, no one tells me what to do, I live by my own rules hippie to be given an audience since the 60's or something?

Nothing original, meaningful, or fresh ever came from that guys mouth. To compare his intellect to Hawking or Dawkins is nuts.

It's extremely obvious that some of you know absolutely nothing about him. Calling Hitchens a 'hippy' is hysterical.

Writing this leaves others with the impression you haven't read his work or watched his debates.

He could be shrill, stubborn, judgmental, and bullying. People from the Clintons to Mother Teresa felt the sting of his diatribes... but he was almost always very well informed and gave strong defenses for his opinions.

So far in the anti-Hitchens corner in this thread, we have a guy who wants to be molested as an altar boy, a self described Christian who wants his enemies to suffer and burn in hell, and a gif of a pissing monkey. That's the intellectual caliber that's shown up.

Why did you leave me out? (page 4, I think). I know Hitchens to be over-rated for his intellect. I said so. But I also said I liked to listen to him.

Hitchens delivery on his thoughts and ideas was way better than the actual content. The classic style over substance debater. (Remember Kennedy won the debate against Nixon according to the viewers, the radio listeners thought Nixon smoke him)

I read an article by a fellow atheist that ridiculed Hitchens for his lies and lack of depth of knowledge on topics he was very critical of.

I've read and heard enough to know he lies about Christian theology, even Eastern religions too. Not everything he espoused was fact based. Like many athiests, he was willing to take liberties with religious teachings in order to make a point. Not very intellectual.

If you change the word atheist to deist or theist then you'd be accurately describing those he debated and mocked.

You can accuse Hitchens of being unfair many times IMO. I think he could go over the top with the strength of his venom - but more often than not the target of his venom was a target that deserved some ridicule. Claiming he was ignorant, rather than unfair with his interpretations and arguments, just doesn't work for anyone familiar with his work.

Slow down now. The answer to that is easily no, but that isn't a knock to Hitchens at all. However, I like, and have respect for, people who I disagree with, but who can debate at an above average level, not take things personally, and know how to get to the bottom ideas. I disagree with 90% of what Hitchens says, but that doesn't mean I don't like him. He's one of the ultimate rationalists and that perspective is necessary.

He wasn't ALWAYS on point, and he had some large gaps in knowledge that he often filled with verbose prose, but most people do. He was just better at it than the rest. I would have loved to have a conversation with him, despite our disagreements....

On the flip side, Hitchens was an arrogant prick, and I do say that with the upmost respect. Stuff like this:
quote:

when the priest came for last rites, hitch actually converted him to atheism

Is not something that anyone should be proud of. I'd rather people who are gifted to use their talents for good, rather than to break others down. Although he often showed flashes of respectful discourse and positive thought, his public persona was built on someone who destroyed, not created. Broke, rather than built. I'm just not a fan of that overall, and to me, his aggression to the opposite keeps him from being enlightened. There's a lack of understanding that he often missed completely. An interesting guy to say the least.

because he's one of the lazy turds that atheists cling to hoping his ranting diatribes back up anything they believe, they're mostly as full of shite as he was. he is basically bill maher without the ability to be funny, that was a good description.

He sure manages to make some of the Christians here quite insecure to the point of being infantile. It's quite the spectacle. Quick edit on 'they're,' by the way. Almost got it by us!

I did not claim he was ignorant. I just don't think he is near the intellectual many of you think him to be. Especially the OP.

Boy, what a reach. Because I said that he didn't know much about Christian theology that somehow means I said he was ignorant?
