Is your life unmanageable because of alcohol? Do you have to lie, steal, and cheat in order to drink your beer? Does your beer take priority over everything else? Do you obsess over your beer? Are you able to stop after just 3 or 4?

All good I will add a couple

Has alcohol got you arrested multiple times?

Have you shown up for court intoxicated?

Do you drink alcohol to make it through the day?

Weed works well for some people, and there's no hangover the next day.
So does meditation, except you actually think better long term instead of worse.

If you don't mind me asking, what made them really bad? Was it missing work, health issues, mistreating friends and family?

Bad as in badly addicted. They knew the consequences but just could not overcome their craving for alcohol. One was a great person, the other not very likable. Both ended up losing their jobs and ruined their health and died too young. When on a binge they would both mistreat family and friends but mostly they mistreated themselves.

What are your hobbies? Pursue those more if you think you're drinking more to kill time. Life doesn't have to be a pattern.

A lot of it is who you're around. All my friends drink, but at different levels. You'll have to make some decisions on your own if you don't want to get blitzed. If you hang with the late night crowd then you're going to get blitzed, and part of the next day will be gone.

I've been a part of both crowds. I've never quit or thought about quitting except on some of those mornings where the day was wasted, but I chopped that up to being young and having a good time.

In my 20's out of school we typically didn't drink until Thursday or Friday and would take off Sunday, but the weekend nights were a binge. It was almost a sport. 30's it became more moderate and spread out with still a night a week or every other week of throwing em back pretty good. If you're single, then you're most likely chasing after the ladies in bars. Its fun, but you get tired of it.

Mid 30's now and I rarely don't drink 2 beers a day. My weekends don't jump into the upper teens, but on a football day I can drink all day pacing myself manning the pit and entertaining guest. We don't tailgate as hard as we used to, which I actually enjoy now that we're in the SEC because I like to remember the good games.

Depending on your personality/addiction behavior level, you don't have to stop, just start doing other things. If you have an addictive personality there might not be a middle ground. I've found mine, but do go overboard on occasion.

I just cracked a tall cold Miller Lite. When that ice cold beverage hits my lips it's like a thousand angels taking a nice tasty whizz of beer in my mouth. And I'm not drinking in moderation tonight, frick that.
