This subject came up on the Music Board the other day.
If you are unhappy with what passes for mainstream country at present, there is an alternative.
Chris Stapleton
Jamey Johnson
Jason Isbell
Sturgill Simpson
All of them produce albums worth of original work that are worth listening to. But they all have a common thread: multi-Grammy award winning producer Dave Cobb. If you really want to listen to fantastic country music, just go take a look at what he works on.
Stripped down songs that feature the songwriters and vocals. Unrefined producing that will instantly make you a fan and remind you that not everyone in Nashville wears pleather and sings bullshite songs on overproduced tracks from pretentious assholes in a studio that don't know WTF country music was or should be.
Seriously...look up Dave Cobb. He'll restore your faith in the genre almost single-handedly.

Yeah I listen to all those guys, plus Cody Jinks and Whitey Morgan. That alternative country is primarily what is played on Outlaw Country on Sirius, which is what my dial is always set on.
I hope they stay alternative too, I don't want any big wig frickstain contemporary people to get their hands on em.

Sturgill Simpson still keeping real Country alive!
Saw him at Saenger in New Orleans last year. Great show.
No opening act, comes out and starts singing, sings the entire time giving the audience exactly what they want. Would definitely recommend seeing him.

Pop music killed old school country, R&B, and several other genres of music.

Seeing Sturgill in Sugarland in September. Really looking forward to it.
The live stuff from YouTube videos are better a lot of times than the recordings. One of his albums sounded really produced. Meta modern I believe. Not sure because I am mostly getting it off Amazon prime.
His NPR show and Charlie Rose were both awesome.
There is also an awesome interview and 25 min show with him and John Prine. Some Grammy somgwriter showcase. Prine is now that old dude who you could listen to his stories all day. The show part of it is just ok. Prine is singing all of his songs with Sturgill adding a little to all the guitar parts and singing back up. Prines voice is tough to mesh with though. It's high twangy gravel. That's a tough sound to harmonize with I guess. Art Garfunkel would probably struggle lol. So the vocal parts are just ok. You just have to be able to appreciate "oh shite. They're singing Paradise".

My only connection to The CMA and country music is one afternoon I had a quick bite in the hotel cafe with Toby Keith who I had never had heard of before. And, then a few weeks later I was passing in front of the TV and saw him singing at The CMA. Told my wife, hey that is the guy I had dinner with

Thanks for posting, I have the youtube playlist for that song on auto play and it is the perfect soundtrack for this Sunday morning in the desert.
Just heard Seven Spanish Angels ( LINK). Great duet with Ray Charles.

Saw Cody Jinks at the Varsity on Fri. Great show. I can't stand the tractor rap shite though.

Sturgill, Cody Jinks and Stapleton. Best part of country these days but you only sometimes hear Stapleton on the radio. Sturgill is the man. If you have not listened to Sturgill Simpson, do yourself a favor and look up "Life Aint Fair Sunday Valley"

Turnpike Troubadours are way up there on my list nowadays. Gonna go see them again in August.
