Walmart will begin restricting opioid painkillers it dispenses to customers as part of an effort to crack down on the nationwide drug-abuse epidemic.

All Walmart and Sam’s Club pharmacies in the U.S. and Puerto Rico will fill opioid prescriptions with no more than a seven-day supply, and will cap the daily dosage at 50 morphine milligram equivalents, the retail giant said in a statement on Monday.

The company said it will comply with states that already have laws stricter than its new policy. “We are taking action in the fight against the nation’s opioid epidemic,” said Marybeth Hays, the Walmart U.S. executive vice president of health, wellness and consumables. “We are proud to implement these policies and initiatives as we work to create solutions that address this critical issue facing the patients and communities we serve.”

The new curbs will begin within 60 days. Beginning in 2020, Walmart and Sam’s Club will require patients to submit e-prescriptions, which resist tampering, for controlled substances.

It doesn't affect me as opiods are not my normal scripts but I see where this policy will just cause more issues for those who don't even use opoids redularly. ( only need them for surgery and kidney stones which is rare).

Plus I have questions on how this will work -

Sounds like a good opportunity for local pharmacies.

I don't really know if this is the answer. Of course, this will affect those who actually need them more.. Well, it will be less convenient since they will have to go more often, to pick up prescriptions, but in order for this to really be effective, wouldn't all pharmacies have to do this? If this becomes an issue for people, they can just go somewhere else.

His point is who is Wal-mart to step in and give script orders, particularly limiting max dosage.

WalMart gets folks into their stores weekly to feed both WalMart’s and their clientele’s fixes.

Do any of these things do anything other than inconvenience people who legitimately need pain meds? We've put all these measures in place and it doesn't seem like they've done a thing to actually curb the epidemic.

Pharmacists. That's who. You know, the people legally responsible for filling drugs who act as a check on doctors for all sorts of things from drug interactions to over-prescribing things Also, they're free to do so legally. If you have a problem with it, go get your narcotics addiction fixed up somewhere.

Pharmacists don't have to fill something theyre not comfortable with. Refusing to fill something is not practicing medicine, it's practicing pharmacy. Go somewhere else if you don't like it.
