The retailer said Wednesday that it teamed up with financial technology startup Even and PayActiv to provide an app to 1.4 million Walmart workers.

The Even app automatically plans ahead for bills, savings goals and will show workers how much they can safely spend. It will also allow workers to access cash before a scheduled payday up to eight times a year for free.

Critics and labor groups said the service is another sign that Walmart doesn't pay its workers enough.

"Living paycheck to paycheck is too common at Walmart and that is the problem that Walmart should be trying to solve," said the Organization United for Respect at Walmart.

Wal-Mart Stores Inc. pays new workers $9 an hour. That's above the $7.25 per hour federal minimum wage, but below some of what its rivals pay. Target Corp., for example, has a minimum hourly wage of $11 and plans to grow it to $15 by the end of 2020.

It’s too bad there’s a law that says Walmart employees can’t go apply at Target

I applied at walmart, honestly it doesn't sound like a bad gig and we don't have a target in bawcomville anyway. they wouldn't hire me though apparently ear gauges are too dangerous to have around fork lifts and stuff

Are Wal-Mart employees not allowed to enroll in community college to better themselves? $9 per hour is honestly not that bad considering most of them are borderline potatoes.

People go to Wal-Mart because it's cheap.

People go to Target because it's not Wal-Mart and it has MILFs.

Sorry to hear that, baw. I hear Family Dollar and Circle K have killer retirement plans. You should go apply there.

Nowhere had hotter milfs than a Target or a Methodist church in the suburbs

The fact that they pay above minimum wage at all should be celebrated. A job at Walmart is a lot easier and less stressful than a lot of jobs that pay minimum wage like fast food or a slaughterhouse.

The fact that someone can make almost $20k per year doing nothing at Wal-Mart should honestly be celebrated instead of shite on.

I currently work at walmart as my college job, and I make over 30k a year doing absolutely NOTHING all day. It’s a really chill job and I would recommend it to anyone age 16-22. (inb4subtlebrag)

My first two jobs were working in grocery stores for minimum wage.

My first, “real,” job while at LSU was making $8.55/hour was at UC Lending here in BR making collections calls. I worked 5 Days/week from 3-9 and then an 8 on Saturday.

Scheduled all my classes in the late AM, and then just shot over to United Plaza after the last one let out. It was perfect.

I had my friends from HS all working in opposing 4-on, 4-off shifts so I could literally go out each night of that week with one or the other group. I made about $1.50/hour less than they did.

There were grown adults that I worked with, but all were either moms working part time, part of a two-income household or people working a part time job to supplement their income. Nobody except for the full time team leads and supervisory staff working at it as a living.

I was incredibly happy with that rate of pay and those hours and my life. Now granted i lived at home, so I wasn’t paying rent, but I guess I find it difficult to imagine how people consider a job earning $9/hour sufficient if you have the title of breadwinner in your family.

Even for me, I knew it was just one stop along the road. I was destined for bigger and better because I knew I couldn’t earn a living or make a career or life out of $8.55/hour. When did so many people that do find themselves in these positions currently decide that upward mobility, ambition, and bettering themselves and their financial positions in life wasn’t necessary?

I was there about two decades ago...and i knew i wasn’t gonna be there long. Why are these people there all this time later, and more content to sit around and hope the world changes around them for the better instead of changing their own lives...which while it takes hard work is 20,000 times quicker and easier to do?

If you work at Walmart, you should not be complaining about living pay check to pay check

$8.55 in 1997 was worth the same as $13.08 in 2017 dollars. LINK
