Wal-Mart getting ready to replace hundreds of jobs with robots

Walmart announced on Monday that it plans to deploy 360 custodial robots by the end of January that will mop the floors of some of its stores.
The retailer said in a joint statement with developer Brain Corp. that the machines will be able to scrub floors even with customers around. The robots will feature multiple sensors that allow them to scan for people and obstacles.
"BrainOS technology allows robots to effectively and safely function in complex, crowded environments, ensuring increased productivity and efficiency across applications," Brain Corp. CEO Eugene Izhikevich said in a statement. "We look forward to continuing to work alongside Walmart to help build intelligent, connected stores."
Bloomberg first reported on the announcement. The devices resemble a miniature Zamboni, the machine used to resurface ice at ice-skating rinks, and a motorized wheelchair, the news outlet said, and are already in use at airports in Seattle, Boston and Miami.
Bloomberg reported that Walmart has previously dipped into the robot market by using automated devices to scan shelves, move products and check inventory.

But it's cool, they'll get to train them first!

Brain found a clever shortcut for getting robots to work in unpredictable environments — make humans do the teaching first. The Whiz comes with a handle which lets a custodian walk the robot through the space that needs cleaning, after that it can perform the task autonomously. Essentially, Brain’s sensors and software transform a regular vacuum cleaner into a robotic one for about $1,000, Izhikevich said.

Hate minimum wage? Fight for $15 an hour, get it, then lose it to robots.

Imagine the thought that you get to train the robot to take your job.

Where’s the Chinese workers?
It was a a deceptive headline/joke meant to pull in clicks that I decided really didn't work that well. I was implying the robots were made in China. But since I actually have no idea where they are made I changed it.

Oh good. Now that there will be fewer employees, Walmart might actually be able to pay the $15/hour wage the workers are demanding. Weird way to get there, but the protests worked! Lotta Walmart workers gonna be unemployed, but the rest will get that raise!

First of all i've been in the situation of being laid of, and being asked to "transfer knowledge" which I said f that too. So it does suck.
BUT in this case I dont think it'll have to be someone currently doing it. Or can retrain that person to do something else if so. I'm sure Walmart has people from corporate that will be sent out to "train" the robots. Not really a hard job to clean up, and probably harder to train that person on how to train the robot.

I can see this effort failing in most Walmart stores. You’ll have fat asses tripping over them and hitting them with their motorized carts and kids fricking with them. People will make sure to trip/slip and fall and sue.

Maybe they can now hire more than three cashiers.

Good.....maybe now people can get a correct answer to a question when shopping

They’ll have to put a shocker wire on top to keep the fat asses from riding them around the store like a scooter

Some disgruntled worker getting laid off will train those frickers to kill!

Walmart is the type of company that would replace human workers, even if minimum wage was $7. Regardless of salary, robots will always become a cheaper long term solution. Though the increase might happen earlier because if the wage increase. But it was going to happen.

It already happened with grocery store cashier's. There's much fewer than ever before.

Home Depot by me is supposed to be replacing a lot of the cashiers with self-checkout stations. They already have two brand new ones put in that have like 32" monitors and those guns that the cashiers use. Work extremely well.
