Correct.

It's why college students always made the best waiters at the restaurant where I worked. They understood this. We had servers averaging close to 25% a month and were a middle line, family restaurant.

Sounds like you left a laughable tip. I used to work with a guy who would leave a dime for the bartender for each drink. Are you him?

I usually tip 5-10% on a take out. Probably a little more if it's a bartender in charge of take out orders.

For $735 worth of food?

It would take you longer to serve yourself a hot pocket

It sounds like you've never spent time in London. They don't tip like us; their employers pay the employees.

In London, they look surprised about the tip, usually say that it isn't necessary, and give you the "I love Americans and their tips" look when you insist.

I've never left a tip for that. I chose to pick your place to order food from. I drove to your restaurant to pick it up. You should give me a tip for adding revenue to your establishment. Why should i give you extra money for taking my credit card and bringing me the bill to sign? By doing what i did, i make your cook work, which he doesn't get paid tips, and i gave your actual restaurant an extra table to make more revenue.
YOUR WELCOME.

Your food is about 20% cheaper than it should be because of the tip system.

If you can't afford to tip, eat at home.

What if it's a bar and grill that I visit three or four times a week to have drinks and place to go orders from quite often.
Am I allowed to leave them a $3 tip or does that get frowned on by the tip lords of the OT?

Nothing wrong with a 3 dollar tip on a to go order

And being a loyal customer, I would hope that whoever is bagging that food takes extra care in making sure everything is right.

Tips on To-gos is a good way to raise your overall gross because it's typically repeat customers.

10-20 bucks on an order that big would have been fine

Exactly. I'm surprised Outback doesn't add gratuity automatically on bills past a certain amount. My previous employer arranged for catering for groups renting the facility and there was always a 15% gratuity added to the orders whether it was delivered by a caterer or the coordinator picked it up from a restaurant.

I do think it is kind of funny how sometimes the same people who bitch about throwing a couple of dollars to the person doing take out at a sit down restaurant will not think twice about throwing a few dollars to a bartender every time he or she literally does nothing more than simply open a bottle of beer for them. If you are using effort put determine tip worth, that is way less work than boxing up food.

I used to do payroll for a restaurant group and in the end I feel that those in the service industry work way harder than I do to make way less money. Tipping a couple of bucks to the take out person will probably mean more to them than me. I'd rather be generous in those instances than "right".

Yeah it's the same couple of bartenders all the time that handle the phone call or take my order while I'm there.
They pour me good drinks and are always friendly so I always tip them

You'd be surprised. Again, I managed in this industry for four years. Low tippers also have a higher rate of complaints, send backs, etc.

Obviously, this isn't the case with all of them but when you look at averages across the spectrum, your best and most loyal customers tend to be your best tippers as well.

You can also turn a mediocre tipper into a good to great tipper over time with repeat good experiences.

It is very much the norm to tip on takeout from a sit down restaurant. Like I said...it is not the norm to tip like you normally would if you sat down and ate there...but it is customary to give a small tip(like around 10%) of your order.

This isn't true at all. You aren't being waited on. Why should you tip the person? Usually takeout gets paid 7-10hr. Most likely just waiting to move up to waitress. I'll tip 1 or 2 dollars if It's over $20, but you're out of your mind if you tip 10% on an order you pick up.

I did eat at home. Had i eaten inside the establishment, i would have tipped, assuming the service was adequate. I don't tip cashiers. Am i supposed to tip the cashier at Academy too?
i'm the one that went out of MY way to give you revenue. I could have eaten at home, and given my money to the grocery store, who i don't have to tip, or i could have gone to any other restaurant where i pick food up that doesn't expect a tip, like Zoe's, Serop's, Smash Burger, etc.

Not my problem. Don't offer to go services if it isn't financially beneficial. As i said before, there are tons of other places that offer take out food that don't ask for tips.
