It was $735 worth of takeout food...that is a lot of stuff to get together.

The business got $735. That was their reward. Well, until they gave it back.

Well it’s pretty much the same as ordering at McDonald’s or chic fil a.

You order. They box/wrap up the food. And hand it to you.

In this instance with the volume I get it but just getting a burger and fries from chilies isn’t much different than getting it from Whataburger

I wonder if those 20 minutes were worth losing her job over?
It was a waitressing job.

Boxing it up. Don't agree that it is as hard as serving, but it is pretty lame to not tip on an order that large. Should have given them 20 bucks or something.

It doesn't surprise me that most of the OT is too stupid to know how much work it is to box up and carry around 75 fricking meals. They should have tipped her at least $20 for carrying it to their goddamned car.

What was the service provided that deserved a tip?

I tip like $3-$5 on take out orders regardless of their size. I know they work for tips too, but missing out on 20% tips is made up in volume.

A little more attention to detail at a restaurant. I can promise you there is more work involved in boxing up 20 dinners at a restaurant than getting 20 dinners at a fast food restaurant. I've worked in both during my younger years.

And fast food workers are paid a higher base wage.

Anyone that doesn't tip at least a small amount for takeout from a restaurant where you normally sit down to eat is pure trash.
This...although she should have kept her pie hole shut about it.

The person at Whataburger is just standing there all day and has the food handed off to them by the other people that work there.

In the case of a restaurant to go order the person placing the order is going back to where the food expediting station is and putting everything together usually.

I’m not saying she didn’t do work, but why is it the customer’s responsibility to pay her for doing her regular job? I understand it’s just how the industry is, but restaurants should pay employees correctly in the first place. Not expect customers to pay the salaries of their employees directly. The person cooking my steak does more work, yet I’m not expected to go in back and slip him 20%.

The tipping service has gotten out of hand in US. I like the way Europe does it. No tip but charge me little extra for my meals. Its upto the business to pay the employees not the customers.

Another example of why tipping is retarded.

Why cant servers recieve a normal paycheck like the rest of the working world?

Giving the church a refund was stupid but paying a tip on a takeout order is also stupid.

I always tip a little on a takeout order. Usually the hostess or bartender gathers and checks all the food and makes sure condiments and other necessities are packed.

I don't disagree but it seems to be the preferred way of doing things.

I think the servers prefer it that way as well. Work harder and you can make more money than the slackers on the staff.

If you create an even wage then there isn't much of a reward for working harder than the person next to you.

Not necessarily. These workers aren't getting paid full wages.

In a sense this was her way of saying she didnt want to work at a place that didnt compensate her properly.

The fact that the restaurant refunded the money makes me think this place has misplaced priorities.

It’s supposed to bring about excellence in service. Similar to commission in sales, as you have a much more vested interest in the customer than receiving a pay check regardless and doing the bare minimum for that. It should be an incentive however, and not an entitlement.

Because restaurant prices would jump 20% and we'd have to listen to all the OT ballers bitch about paying $14 for their fried cheese sticks at Applebee's.

Then why does anybody salaried do more than the bare minimum? We are all expected to perform our jobs well.
