Unpaid. I would bet in general women have more paid maternity than men do paternity.
And I highly doubt that an equal amount of men take 12 weeks versus women. Just goes to the fact that women tend to miss more work than men.

i only take off if a kid is sick or my wife is sick and can't take care of them.
i haven't taken a personal sick day since i had the no more baby surgery 6 years ago.
at the end of the day more men take jobs that require longer hours and more strenuous work than MOST women (Good Lord I didn't say all.) Until we can prove a woman working in O&G, Retail, Sales, or whatever at the same level that a man is with the same experience and skill set for less money, it's not even a discussion it's just selective statistics.

Just posing question as that is the original reason for thread.
Does a woman missing (on average) 4-6 more days a year than a man really make that much of a difference?

I'd be fine, even though I wouldn't do it. A lawyer would have a field day with that wrongful termination suit though (assuming your production remained at the level it was before the leave).

It's simple. Statistics show women miss more work due to a variety of factors. So it makes sense they'd earn less because they're less reliable.

I think companies are put in bad positions when employees are out for long periods of time. Most will pay the reliable ones a higher wage. I work with someone who has missed at least 4-5 months in the last 3 years...how can she bitch about pay?
