A good friend and former co-worker's mother was diagnosed with it several years ago. Even had a second opinion to confirm. Unfortunately, she had passed on a couple years after her diagnosis.

3-5 years after official diagnosis is the norm. Usually takes a year to get the official diagnosis, there isnt really a test for it, its a process of elimination of everything else.

A few years back my ex-girlfriends aunt was diagnosed with it in May. She said that a fast onset type of ALS ran in the family and that her aunt had several relatives that died within months of the diagnosis. I had never heard of that and told her she was wrong and that it takes years for ALS to result in death. Her aunt died that September. I was absolutely wrong. Walking (with a cane) and talking in May and gone in September.

My friend's son and mine played high school football together. We actually coached with each other when they were youths so we were tight. Both of us lifted so we were in shape and actually he was probably bigger than me which is saying something since I am a 5'11" 240 powerlifter. I saw him at the first game of our son's Freshman football game and he looked thin. I mean like I asked him what the frick are you cutting weight for? We hazed each other alot. Then a mutual friend told me the diagnosis of ALS about 2 months later. I was crushed for him and his family.

Our kids just graduated high school so it's been 4 years. I am waiting any day to attend the funeral.....

Yeah there is an aggressive form

Typically the older you are at onset, life expectancy decreases.

There are 2 main kinds bulbar onset which starts with your breathing and voice. They are usually the ones who go faster.and limb onset which obviously starts in your arms and legs. There are also familia , which is hereditary and sporadic. Unfortunately I am 15 months in with limb onset. If anyone has any questions fire away...

I am a friend of hers, and I can tell you, there are few people I've met in my life with as much talent and positive drive as Donna.

It's a damn shame that it's ALS, and I just feel rotten about it.

As for TV, she's one of those people you won't miss until she's gone. She's a part of our lives every day. Easy to take for granted. But B.R. was lucky to have her.

Sad. She's an institution.

Als is extremely uncommon in women, right?

I think more men get it, but my grandmother had it. For most people, I think they start to get weaker in their lower extremities first and works its way up, but she started getting weaker in her upper extremities.

Anyone I've come across that's known her has pretty much said the same. On air she always came across genuinely nice, but she's apparently that same way in person. Very sad news.

Sad to hear of her illness. Truly a fair and stalwart reporter who's seen a lot of changes in BR.

Prayers for her and her family.

ALS is one of the most cruel diseases out there. Makes the sober mind a captive in a withered body.

Lost a cousin to ALS five years ago and have a friend in church who is in year two of this crap. Cure can't come soon enough.

My father died from that progression. Make the most out of every day while you can. If I could suggest one thing I wish we would have done with my father, make a video of your life story. Essentially your memoir while you have most of your motor control and can hold long conversations. Try to get as much down about your life as possible. I wish I had something like that our family could go to when we wanted.

Prayers for Donna. One of the nicest people I've ever met. She's a BR institution. A dear friends father just succumbed to this disease. It's awful.

What were some differences that you first noted? Was it changes in your breathing, voice, range of motion in your muscle or functional muscle strength?

Have you received any occupational or physical therapy services? I am just curious bc I am an OT student who will get licensed next year and I want to work with clients such as yourself along with tbi, cva, and sci, anything that is neurological based.
