I'm thinking this must have been the type she had. I know the first noticeable symptom was a little bit drooling.

yep, when my brother in law was diagnosed with ALS his voice was the first thing to be affected. a few months in you could not understand what he was saying. not long after that he couldn't walk.within a year after losing the ability to speak he was dead.

As i said, this is a cruel disease.

I have had the misfortune of working with ALS pts...I say misfortune because I can't think of a more devastating disease to the pt and the family, and it's very, very hard to watch that happen and remain professional and detached. It was heartbreaking every time.

I hope that a good SLP is working with her on an augmentative communication device, it's never too early to start training on them...Keeping someone in communication with the outside world for as long as possible is sooooo important.

God bless her.

ETA: Like I need to tell YOU any of this, sorry man. I just read your other posts!

God bless you, too!

I went to St. Josephs school in Ponchatoula. We have lost 2 of our classmates from the same class. That is 2 of about 35 kids. I feel for anyone who has to undergo this slow death. One took the slow route with the trache the other just took meds orally. He had a hard time swallowing the crushed meds.It took several years of being ill before he was finally diagnosed. He lasted about 5 months after the diagnosis. After watching both go, one slow and the other faster, but still painfully slow. I am glad that I don't have to choose because it would be only one way.

ALS is an evil disease. Have a client, in his 30's, who has it. His brain functions perfectly, but his body does not function now at all.
