Volkswagen's born-again International Harvester Scout is beginning to take shape. While official details remain few and far between, an unverified report claims that the model is being developed as a true off-roader and that it won't arrive as the product of badge engineering.
While he didn't share photos of what he saw, he reported that community and history are "very important" to the folks in charge of resurrecting the Scout and they want to stay as true to the original as possible. That doesn't mean putting AMC's 258-cubic-inch straight-six back into production; instead, the SUV and pickup variants of the Scout will land as true off-roaders designed to venture far off the pavement. They won't be city-friendly crossovers.
We know that the models in the rebooted Scout range will exclusively be offered with an electric powertrain
Finally, it sounds like affordability will play an important role in shaping the new Scout models. Of course, that's a relative term. Affordable compared to a Jeep Gladiator, which carries a base price of $39,000, or compared to a Rivian R1T, which costs $73,000? Affordability and electric technology tend to be mutually exclusive, so it will be interesting to see how Volkswagen strikes a balance between the two.
"This will not be a 40-plus-year-old truck; we already have that," Bade summed up, adding that "it's still early so obviously things are going to change, and some details were not known and realistically haven't been decided."
As far as official details are concerned, we know that the Scout models will be developed and built in the United States with an eye on the North American market. The first prototypes will make their debut before the end of 2023, and production will tentatively start in 2026. Volkswagen hopes to sell approximately 250,000 Scouts annually.

I don't know why, but that made me laugh.

Hopefully not with VW reliability

I can't wait to go pick up mulch from Home Depot with it. You know, really take it through the motions and find out what it's made of.

This is basically the equivalent of the food trend from 10-15 years ago where these companies were putting cheese and bacon on everything for no reason whatsoever.
We're bringing back Nerds candy, now with cheese and bacon!

Electric Vehicle, Designed for off-road, not city friendly. Targeting 250,000 Baws who want an EV.
Bold Strategy. BOLD.

Our usual EV fanboys will be in here soon to lecture us on how this is better than an ICE vehicle

Instead of jerry cans, you carry 700 packs of Duracell AAs, in case you run out

Honestly I'd take one with a very simple gas or diesel engine before an electric one. Unless they can figure out how to get 400 miles of range and rapid charging while still making the batteries easy/cheap to replace and keeping the price down.
If they can sell this for less than $65,000 I'd be shocked. And by then the bugs would be worked out of the F-150 Lightning and GMC Hummer EV SUV - they might even be on the second generation by then. And we'd also have the Silverado EV, a couple of electric Jeeps, and electric Land Rovers along with the new Cybertruck and Rivian SUV.
VW is doing well with the electric crossover. But there are a lot of issues with them discussed in the forums. This new line of EV's from almost all manufacturers except Tesla are problematic, and not all dealers know how to handle them.
ETA: Why on earth did GM not work out a development and distribution rights for a new Scout when they partnered with Navistar 5-6 years ago for medium trucks? That's a big missed opportunity....but their CEO is a world class dipshit though.

We'll you'd need to build charging stations on the trail. But to do that you'd need to build roads so the construction equipment can get up there. But if you do that, you won't need an off road vehicle to get there anymore and you can just drive your Model 3 up there. So.....

Ummm…buddy, if your electric mountain bike runs out of juice, you can just carry it back.
