I would love for some consortium of geniuses to figure out interstellar travel in my lifetime.

Really cool that Earth is receiving data from something outside the heliopause that other humans created in a decade where cell phones, PCs, or the Internet have yet to come into existence.

And here we are stuck under the sun's thumb, with no access to any of those sweet galactic cosmic rays.

Voyager turned and took a photo of earth from when it was just over 4 billion miles from earth.

Hope you were smiling

One of the more intimidating take aways from the info you provided is that in all those years it is still only as far away as light travels in 16.5 hours.

And when they were launched, they had the the equivalent of a TI-86 scientific calculator or just a touch more. What could we do now?

Humans will be the only ones to see voyager. We will most likely develop interstellar travel before that thing leaves the OORT cloud.

It won’t be humans traveling between the stars. Rather, it will be the first non-biological species of A.I. The only way humans will ever see the Voyagers again is if A.I. catches them and brings them back to earth.

I just sent my offer to NASA volunteering my body to ride on the next trip. I’ll take a few million bucks a year until I’m about 70 or terminally ill. Freeze me and blast me off. Y’all need me to bring back anything from the other side of the Milky Way while I’m in the neighborhood?

How is “data” sent from the probe back to earth when this probe is billions of miles away?

Watch this to answer that question and other fascinating things about the Voyager 1 and 2. It's almost 20 mins long but well worth watching.

LINK

Ultimately the Voyagers will end up orbiting the Milky Way Galaxy. It will take 225 million years to make one orbit around the center of the Milky Way, and they could orbit for billions of years.

Years of watching CSI tells me that you can zoom in, enhance, and see for yourself if I was smiling or not.

This animation shows the trajectory that voyager 2 has taken through the solar system since it was launched in 1977.

pretty interesting they were separated and went in opposite directions

Voyager 1 arrived first to Saturn and they wanted to get a flyby of one of its moons, Titan. However they couldn’t do that AND gravity assist to the outer planets. So Voyager 1 was forced to leave the plane of the solar system. Voyager 2 then was able to gravity assist to the outer planets.

We could send platforms easily capable of running Candy Crush, Grand Theft Auto, Call of Duty Black Ops 4 and every Nintendo Game box game ever invented. We could share Pong with the universe.
