Visited the Angola Rodeo and Craft fair and was amazed what I saw. Can good come from bad?

Went to the Angola Rodeo and Craft fair today, had never been before and didn’t know what to expect.
I was absolutely floored by the amount and quality of craftsmanship on display there. Gorgeous wooden furniture. Chairs, tables, chests, whole bedroom sets. All made from a plethora of different woods, all by hand. bowls, puzzle boxes, decorative items. Leather work, art, food.
Intricately carved models. Scale ships, cycles, heavy equipment.
I bought an incredible wooden ship and an articulated wooden trackhoe, both at insanely good deals. Never even made it to the rodeo I was so engrossed by the wares on display, most made from scrap and salvage.
Carved and forged by the hands of men condemned, guilty or innocent. With nothing but time I suppose you learn a hobby, an outlet for your energy, or you go insane. And it made me think...odds are many there were restless, listless men without structure or guidance, swept up in moments of foolishness, desperation or passion...and when the high wore off and adrenaline faded they had crossed a line they’d pay for the rest of their lives.
It made me think about the system...if we are to put men away to rehabilitate them, give them structure and skills and trades, turn them into productive members of society...what to do when they have paid their debt to society and are truly changed men?
I saw skills there that are hard to find in the free world. Men much more valuable than some of those walking free today. I understand the necessity of punishment, and still think kiddie diddlers, violent rapists and those that kill the most innocent and vulnerable among us should swing...but I think I was softened a bit by my experience.
Perhaps even broken men can be mended. And what those in society who are idle simply need purpose and guidance, structure in a world gone mad. If we could purge the cancerous elements of society and replace destruction and degeneracy with building and creation, we might be able to salvage the good from the midden heap of rottenness.
Fruits may grow even from the offal if good seeds are planted and tended.
TL;DR version
If you get a chance go to Angola and check out the crafts they have. You won’t regret it.
Will post pics of some of the stuff I got when I can figure out how to upload them from phone

Without a 9-5 and a chef to cook your meals, you can learn a lot of shite.

my impression of it all was exactly the same...prisons always strike me as one hell of a waste of humanity. the talent that those guys in angola posses is really unbelieveable....and few of them will ever see freedom again.

I bought a beautiful painted gun rack at the Angola Rodeo last year. Eventually I'm going to get one of those nice wooden rocking chairs for the back porch.

Was wandering around when we first got there and was a little overwhelmed. So much cool stuff I didn’t even know existed, far superior to the chintzy Chinese crap you see at flea markets.
Then I saw all these ships. Around 3’ long and 2’ high. Intricately detailed, the rigging, decks, sails and all the filigree. All done by hand. I found the craftsman and asked the price, expecting something outrageous for the art I saw on display. Was going to nod and walk, then he told me the price. I didn’t even haggle, told him sold right there. Ended up going back and getting a steal on several other pieces.
And I could tell his friend with him, probably an apprentice of sorts, had made some of the simpler stuff. But I could see the teaching the older man was giving him. Was impressed.
I told him some pieces I wanted, some ideas,
And he told me to come back in October. I’m honestly sort of giddy at seeing what he works up.

There are people who may possess (or learn) an exceptional skill, but whom are still bad people.
Tyreke Hill is great at his craft (playing football) and earns a good amount of money at it, but it obviously hasn't changed who he is as a person.

You want your family to live next to the violent murderer because he can make a good rocking chair?
What they make is pretty cool. But I think you are being a little naive.

What is a “bad person” though?
Does a bad decision in the heat of the moment forever taint you? Wrong place, wrong time, wrong decision and you are forever damned?
There are plenty of actually bad people, rotten souls who will never see the inside of a cell. Stories every day of those with power and influence getting a slap on the wrist for things for which other men will be locked away forever.
I doubt all prisons are like this. Some are just schools for criminals to become better (worse) criminals. You see so many repeat offenders, the ones continually locked up and released only to cause harm again...they aren’t being rehabilitated. They aren’t learning anything positive to society.
Perhaps we need reform, a way to cull those with good still in them from the herd of the wretched and give them a chance to repair their brokenness and become a light in the world of darkness. Instead of throwing them into the dark to be forgotten and choke out any good that might be left.

A man can get a lot done when he doesn't have pussy and other dumb shite to distract him.

It’s far more nuanced than that. I think of history. Violence and bloodshed were commonplace throughout the long march. Killers and thieves and reavers lived alongside everyone else. There weren’t the massive penitentiaries where men could be locked up for breaking any one of the myriad laws in a system.
Killers have been in our midst from the beginning. The men who built the world were killers and conquerers. And we celebrate some of them today. And i’m Not just talking about murderers. I’m sure there are people there locked up for crimes that threatened the state more than society.
It just seems like there is positive energy there that could be put to better use.

Oh frick off. Thinking that perhaps there’s a better way to punish crimes and reform people doesn’t mean I support clown world. There’s room to be tough on those who are truly evil and still reform a broken system.
