Governor Ralph Northam is expected to announce his support for extending the school year through summer to ensure students are prepared for the next academic year.

quote:

Northam says that in order to get students back in the classroom, Virginia’s schools need federal relief to be able to do so safely, using equipment and sanitation amid the coronavirus pandemic.

quote:

“Our kids need to be back in school — our parents need a break, too,” Northam said. “We’ve asked a lot for the past year from our children and our families, and now it’s time for us to help them — to give them some extra time this summer to get them prepared will be in everybody’s best interests.”

So he needs shite that a bunch of other states haven’t needed to keep their schools safe and in session for a long arse time now?

ETA: including private schools IN Virginia.

Yes, the State propagandizing your kids and committing them to lifelong groupthink because parents "need a break."

I was going to bring my son home at Christmas break. He’s been in school in Mont Belview, Tx. after evacuating for the hurricane. I decided to let him stay and finish out the school year there. They’ve had normal classes and normal schedules this entire year.

If I had brought him back, he would be attending school well into the summer because of their delayed schedule.

OTOH, I’m not opposed to a school schedule that was year long with breaks between semesters. I don’t know of any other countries that give kids a two or three month break for summer. We’re not all farmers anymore. And get rid of daylight savings while we’re at it.

No reason kids shouldn't be in school year round.

Northam should just have them all wear white hoods for protection from COVID.

So so so glad I live in Texas where we’ve been chugging along since early September in person.

My kid has been back in school full time since August with very few Covid issues. These people are morons.

I’m reminded how much I love living in Texas whenever I read things like this. You better believe my kids are going to school in person. And there have been no issues. Schools have never been safer since half the kids aren’t there.

Teachers unions are too strong here.

During the first semester, all learning was distance via zoom 4 days a week. Wednesday off.

Starting January, they graciously allowed kids to return to class one day a week, with no teacher in the classroom still teaching via zoom. A lot of people just decided to homeschool the kids and they are raving about how much better it is.
