Is that seriously going to be your argument? She was smoking in her own car, which is not illegal. He asked her politely to put it out and she questioned why she had to put out a cigarette in her own vehicle. That's when he got pissed that she was talking back and went on his power trip.

I'm not arguing anything. I'm simply waiting for some sales person to bring me donuts or kolaches and throwing out potential scenarios.
You seem to be the upset one.

It's a systemic problem., it's how most cops behave, it's how they're trained and how they see civilians. That's just the way it is, and that is the entire problem. That video is a text book example of where a cop could have easily de-escalated or ignored a situation (cigarette), but chose the opposite. That happens hundreds, maybe thousands of times a day. THAT video shows the real problem. It's a lack of empathy for civilians and the view that police officers have that they are authoritarian occupying force.

1) she didn't stop at the right turn, so he had the right to pull her over (and that's probably what he should have said)
2) it was a dick move to pull her over for not putting a turn signal on when moving over
3) it's against the law to smoke in your car?
4) he didn't establish why she was being arrested
I'm going with the cop being in the wrong.
However I was pulled over last year for the same thing, not putting a signal on to get out of the way. The cop asked for me and my brother's licenses, which may be illegal anyways. We both consented and he let us go on our way.
In regard to the woman, it wouldn't surprise me that she killed herself to become a "victim", thus provoking another uproar over police brutality.
the cop should be suspended at the minimum, and a close look at what happened in the jail cell.

I believe that video should be showed to civilians and explained that's not how to treat a law enforcement officer. He was a nice guy, until the woman disrespected him.
Had she put out her cigarette, no story.
You people and your power trips. Abide the law enforcement officer and his commands and you will be on your way with no incident.

She did have videos talking about how black people are mistreated and aren't giving the same opportunities and talking about police brutality, so this is a possibility, no doubt.

The officer asked her to put out her cigarette. Regardless of if its against the law or not, he asked. Had she done it, things would have been different.

I don't disagree that if she put her cig out there would have been no story.
But the fact is that she didn't have to. It's not against the law to smoke.
Not sure what you don't get about that?

He asked...and she declined. Then he went on his power trip.

I haven't read the whole thread. But it is not in the cops realm of power to have someone put out a cigarette. She had every right to keep smoking.

But according to TigerHam you have to do whatever the cop says (regardless of whether or not its a lawful order), just because he's a cop.

Oh no, I get it. I'm just stating that individuals that think "well, it's not illegal so I don't have to do it" seem to be the ones always in this situation.
There's no video of an officer saying "ma'am please put out your cigarette" then she does and he drags her out of the car.
He is in control. He has the weapon, he has the cuffs and he has the law on his side.

No no, I never said you had to do any of this. It's simply in your best interest. I don't know how long it's going to take for you people to understand that.
Kolaches are here!!!

Or still get shot in the leg after politely obeying cop

That's exactly the us vs. them mentality that I was referring to. And the law was not on his side in this case (pulling her out of the vehicle for not putting out the cig).

Man, cops aren't all powerful. They aren't judges and this isn't a courtroom. Is it a good idea to listen to them? Sure. Should someone feel obligated to listen to a cop when they ask you to stop doing something that is your right? No.
Unless you're asking me to stop doing something against the law, then frick your command. I'm an adult. If I wanna smoke a cigarette I will.
