The majority of these video game companies hire QA on a contractor basis around large changes. This is actually probably somewhat normal to “lay them off”. If they are contractors companies don't have to pay them benefits.

Maybe in some corners of industry, this would be true, but EA Baton Rouge was not staffed by imported immigrant labor.

Yea, and preventing workers from seeking a union is a violation of federal law. I get that you don't see the value in their job, but it does have great value in that industry and what EA has done is wrong.

In this case, the job sucks, but everyone knows that going in. It’s a crappy dead-end low paying job that doesn’t really require any skills. The performers of said job were basically being forced to train their off-shored replacements, and decided to try to unionize to stop it. They all got fired as a result, but they probably were all going to get fired anyways.
The reality is that when our marketplace is global, it’s a race to the bottom for multi-national corporate to pay the lowest possible wage to the poorest possible worker that can get the job done. Why pay Americans $12/hr when you could pay Indian peasants $1.00/hr?

The he/him and she/hers that worked at EA got what was coming to them. Give me a break, a union for video game testers.
Looks like a solid move by management in my opinion.
“Union? A union? Y’all are going to for a union? Ok. I’ve got a union for you… a Soviet Union!”

treat and pay their employees as little as possible
Imagine that. Private companies would like to make a profit.
How much should we be paying entry level employees these days?
Posted on 3/2/23 at 5:39 pm to notiger1997
EA has over 6,000 employees. Over half make over $104k. The lowest paid makes $43k
Not exactly slave wages.
These guys were working for a subcontractor who decided to outsource.

Video game testers
That is a real job?
That is a real job?

Being infinitely replaceable doesn't give you a lot of leverage. And to those arguing this is a bad thing, if you are still doing an entry level job at entry pay after 2 years, you are either not trying or you aren't doing the best thing for your skills. There is nothing inherently noble about the bottom of the labor scale.
Also AI will replace all of these jobs in a few years anyway.

Did you guys file a grievance with the newly formed union?

Scruffy should talk to his doctor friends and go on strike to show solidarity with the gamers.

Considering how shitty EA games are on release day it's obvious they weren't doing their job.
