My father in law served on the USS Mississippi (BB41) during WWII. It was decommissioned and the name was given to a nuke cruiser in the 70s and then a sub after that.

Hell every Star Trek fan should know there were multiple ships named USS Enterprise. When the Ford class Carrier Enterprise launches soon, she will be the 9th US Navy ship to bear the name. The original carrier Enterprise was also a Yorktown class carrier and was also present at the Battle of Midway.

There have been eight United States Navy ships named the USS Enterprise. My dad was on Enterprise CV-6, was on it at Midway, and watched the Yorktown get hit, list badly, and burn (the one in the OP.) She (Yorktown) eventually did sink.

I'm glad the new carrier is being named Enterprise. I'm tired of carriers named after presidents.

Had a good friend in college in the 90s who was a Navy brat from Jacksonville. He always said he wanted the Navy to name another ship Enterprise just to mess up that scene in Star Trek where they have photos of the previous Enterprises. He's getting his wish.

Also, without looking it up, wasn't CV10 Yorktown originally going to be the USS Bonnehome Richard?

This picture is actually surprising to me. The reason is the red “meatball” in the middle of the star insignia on what appears to be the wing of a Grumman F4F Wildcat fighter. The Navy ordered all “meatballs” removed in May 1942. The Yorktown was sunk a month later in June 1942 at the Battle of Midway. Every image I’ve ever seen of American aircraft from the Battle of Midway (and I’ve seen a lot) shows the national insignia without the “meatball”. These Dauntless dive bombers are an example of what I’m talking about…

But it’s clear that when the Yorktown went down, she still had at least one plane that had not been updated. What I’m wondering is why didn’t this plane get updated?

That’s right. CV10 was laid down just days before the attack on Pearl Harbor. It was originally going to be named the USS Bon Homme Richard. But after CV5 was sunk at Midway, it was decided to name CV10 Yorktown. About a year later, another Essex Class carrier would be named USS Bon Homme Richard.

It’s very common. For example, here is the USS Iowa everyone knows…

But here’s the first battleship named USS Iowa…
In some ways it was too bad we didn't get the very last battleship the United States planned, which would have been--wait for it--the U.S.S. Louisiana, BB-71, a Montana-class battleship (Wikipedia). Same main guns as the Iowa-class, but twelve of them instead of 9, plus much thicker armor and much bigger.

And there was the older battleship U.S.S. Louisiana, BB-19

and also the nuclear ballistic missile submarine SSBN-743

I was disappointed to see a new carrier named Kennedy right after retiring the former one. And, Carl Vinson and John C Stennis? Hell, neither served in the military. Get back to naming them after navy veterans.

The Yorktown you visited in September is the Essex Class CV10 USS Yorktown that was launched in 1943. It was named “Yorktown” to honor the Yorktown Class CV5 USS Yorktown that was sunk

Interesting note- both carriers during their service had exactly the same number of casualties.

Could be as simple as this plane was a hangar queen that didn't get updated before the battle .

Just because it was on the ship doesn't mean it was FMC

David McCampbell?

A Navy Captain awarded the Medal of Honor with a distinguished flying career. More worthy than the proposing the USS Bill Clinton.
But maybe I’m wrong but isn’t there already a ship named for him?

I looked it up. The one in Charleston was named after the one in OP. They are distinguished by "cv-5" and "cv-10" proceeding their names, as they are different ship classifications.

CV-5 served a short but distinguished term. She was instrumental in sinking a Japanese carrier in early May 1942 at the Battle of the Coral Sea. She was badly damaged and steamed back to Pearl and needed weeks of drydock for full repairs. She left drydock in Pearl after 72 hrs and joined the task force at Midway in the first wk of June where she was sunk after a massive destructive raid that sank 4 Japanese carriers.

This is by far my favorite WWII podcast. They get really down into the weeds with the details in every episode.

They did an episode this year about that USA Yorktown video. Their knowledge and commentary make it.really engrossing.

frick it. He was a carrier pilot, and deserves a carrier.
They can name the other ship after a politician.

And if not for a Jap sub she might well have survived Midway. Even after all of the battle damage from the battle, and a heavy list, she stayed afloat.

She said had a salvage crew aboard trying to get her stable enough to limp back to Pearl for repairs (again) when a Jap sub picked up her debris trail and put a torpedo in her (and sinking the destroyer that was supporting her). I think even then it took 12 hours or so for her to capsize and go under.
