i had 2 pools; one w/ sand filter one with carts. sand all day, every day and twice on weekends
you want DE? buy a box and dump a cup in the return and it will settle over the sand and filter out more particles.
eta of course backwashing removes it but just like shaving, just put another scoop in after you backwash.

A biz friend in Houston told me $250k to make it nice. He'll never have another pool but it was fine when their son was young.

I'd consider dropping 100k on a pool

quote:in SLA it extends the season to basically year round. hell i got in the hot tube when we got 10 inchs of snow. Have you looked into the DIY radiant heating tubes? basically a 2x4 box with hose coiled in it you put on a roof or shed and pump water through. cheaper way to raise the temp than a heater.
In S LA it would extend several months.

We added a UV sterilizer to our equipment and it will lighten your chemical load

GTFO i love when people come over and when they step in my water in the middle of august it feels like they are getting in a cold tub...
My only complaint is we didn't add chiller. We have a shallow water pool. Deepest is like 5 feet. It gets warm in August. But it still feels good at 95* when its 110 outside.
Also our pool guy talked us out of the "side fountains" that shoot water back into the pool. I like the noise they make and that supposedly helps cool it down some.

Lots of good info in this thread. I'm in the "keep it simple" crowd. The previous owners built our pool but we just HAD to renovate it. It had to be re-plumbed since the builder used a flexible PVC which failed - make sure your builder is not using that. I didn't even know that product existed until trying to fix leaks.
Cool Deck or Sundek is an adequate patio surface but I've found from my experience and looking at other pools that the concrete decking will inevitably crack. Make sure the concrete installer lifts/suspends the rebar in the concrete as opposed to letting it sit on the dirt during the pour and basically do nothing. Another option is to do fiber-reinforced concrete to reduce cracking. I did both rebar and FRC. We also went over our concrete with a leathered marble stone and it has been awesome so far. No issues with heat and it looks good. The only negative is that you will immediately be blinded when going outside because it reflects the sun like a frickin mirror.
The pool builder suggested quartzite as the pool finish and we've been happy with that so far. It's only slightly more expensive than plaster and is not supposed to stain or discolor as easily.
I would definitely figure out drainage issues with the new patio. That includes your current drainage from the roof and new pool deck surface. Make sure you have a place for water to go. A lot of times drainage is an after-thought.
I had a great experience with the contractor renovating my pool but his subs need to be watched as they were not the sharpest bulbs

Get a quality cover for the winter, preferably one that stretches so tight the dog can walk out on it without getting more than its paws wet. Also, safety fence around it in case the neighbor's kid is a wandering little bastard.
Dunno why this is getting downvoted, I got an automatic one that a person can walk on and it’s worth its weight in gold. I also have a curious 2 year old though it’s peace of mind as well as keeping the pool clean from debris

I put in my pool 10 years ago. The first few years I could not keep the kids out of it. They are older now (in college) and don't spend any time at all in the pool anymore.
TBH I wish I would have never put up the expense to put one in. In the future I would have no problem purchasing a house that already has a pool - but I would NEVER have one put in again.

We're in South La.
I've hsd both; Travertine here for the win.
When I lived in Scottsdale, I didn't see much Kool deck. Mostly tile, but yes, it got hot.

Another thought re: the hot tub. If you add one, put it near your main deck sitting area so it’s easier to converse with those who choose not to get in. It should also be in proximity to your outdoor tv. I can’t tell you how many games we’ve watched from the hot tub.
And if you add the hot tub/spa, then it’s a no brainer to have a heater. I can get the hot tub from 65° to 90° in about 20min with my gas heater whereas heating the entire pool takes at least half a day.

Excellent thoughts.
OP, also check references before you sign a contract.
Pool builders are scum, for the most part.

Chiller if you live in a Southern state. Salt water. Hot tub.

Worst decision you can make is to put a pool in. Take it from experience
