Some organization would be better, but with the scale of the event it is incredibly difficult.

My dad and a few buddies are registered with the local sheriff's department since they have airboats in case they're needed in an emergency. It's a good program on a small scale but you're not going to implement it during Katrina or the flood.

For some reason, I don't think we're getting the whole story here. There were talks on here about the local sheriffs requiring an officer in every boat. Maybe he is suggesting some sort of permit that would allow these people to search and rescue without needing to have an officer with them.

I'm just playing devils advocate here. I don't know his true motives, but I'm not quite ready to jump to conclusions and burn him at the stake.

I'm sure he'd turn down the guy 20ft away and wait for the coast guard to show up when his boat is on fire and sinking 50 miles offshore. Perfect idea to make it illegal for someone to help drowning people. That guy needs to be shamed into quitting

Absolutely nothing needs to change. Civilian volunteers rescued exponentially more than the national guard, Coast Guard, and first responders did combined.

Seems like the government agencies need to unfrick themselves because they were the slowest to react.

Maybe so. I've got some family in the Denham Springs area who said they could see propeller marks on the hoods of vehicles and stuff. Granted, your vehicle is toast anyway, but it's plausible some of these people are careless.

I don't think it is enforceable, but asking people to register for something like this going forward seems reasonable. You're not going to turn away the help if it gets out of hand, and it shouldn't cost anything, but trying to organize it is fine by me.

ETA: , nothing but down votes for saying it should be free and no help should be turned away in a widespread emergency. Suggesting people register with the sheriff's office is a practical idea. If you want to help, don't you want to know where the most help is needed? Wouldn't you want to sheriff to contact you if you're needed?

Permits my arse. After Katrina, elected officials made it easier for themselves to access disaster areas. We all know these public servants and their families deserve to be the first back in to their homes and neighborhoods.

Right, just what we need. Make the LEO's who are already stretched way beyond thin, have to go around checking cajun navy guy's permits in the middle of a deadly crisis.

"Senator Perry, we'd love to let you and your grandma get out of that flooded house and into our boat, but we don't have the proper permit. Liability and all, you know. Later."

Seriously.

Was there some sort of egregious problem with the CN they handled the rescues?

Not that I've heard. I'm in the guard and spent all of last week working closely with LEOs and first responders. I actually was one of the National Guard liaisons to Vermillion Parish. The LEO's didn't have a single complaint about civilians helping people.

Let me get this straight, while people are drowning in their houses, instead of having sheriff deputies trying to save them, he wants them to stand outside the flooded area to stop volunteer rescuers from, well, rescuing. Makes sense if you are a politician.
