True but they will need to put up 100,000+ more towers to have the same coverage area.

It will be great in very specialized areas but the signal can’t travel long distance and will have issues in buildings. From what I have been told.

That would be me.

Currently working on TMO 5G project as well as ongoing LTE-U and dabbling in Sprint Massive MIMO (more than likely TMO project if FCC allows merger)

We recently received a 3.5 billion dollar deal from TMO and another undisclosed amount from ATT. We have already upgraded Verizon's hardware to be able to go full 5G in major markets.

Nokia (me) and Erricson are the two largest providers of telecom equipment and services. It's not uncommon for a carrier to go with both vendors but we always fight for end to end vendor agreements.

5G in its current state will be looking to be deployed at 39Ghz frequency. This will not require 100k macro sites. In fact, existing sites will only require a radio change as most providers are already on an AirScale platform or Ericsson equivalent.

Now, obviously with a high frequency, you have low propagation, so the idea is deploying small cells within LoS of the 5G antenna to relay signal. The goal is to get 39Ghz out while still working on 700Mhz (Because this is the real goal).

The biggest issue currently in the higher frequencies is simply signal loss. A human being can walk through a 39Ghz beam and disrupt it. So the idea is to blanket enough of 5G to mitigate that issue.

The other issue is that 5G modems are rather large currently. I know Qualcomm is working pretty hard on this along with Intel but we still use MTP devices to make calls.

Is this safe, or 20 years from now we'll all be fried from our cell phones and wifi signals?

You will be able to download videos much faster, but I think it will allow other technology to be able to be rolled out. And will be better for driverless cars, it will send the signals to the cars faster so that they can brake faster, etc.

As a former WC employee I can say this is false.

Worldcom emerged as a company after the breakup of AT&T allowed competition to enter the market. Worldcom bought MCI, a long distance phone service provider

Worldcom went belly up due to their incredibly late entry into the wireless market and was eventually purchased in a fire sale.

Verizon was formerly named Bell Atlantic, which was one of the major local phone companies formed from the breakup of the AT&T monopoly

Verizon used it's local telephone service monopoly to build a cellular network when it correctly predicted customers would transition away from local hardwired phone service.

This commercial fails to mention ONE huge thing.

Up until 1984 these telecommunications companies were all AT&T. So in 1983 they were newly formed Atlantic Bell.

They didn't become Verizon until they gobbled up a few other Bells. Southwestern Bell, became BellSouth then bought out AT&T then assumed that name, CenturyLink (based in Monroe)bought what was pacific Bell.
So what's left of AT&T is three large communication companies. (or two giants and one sorta big company)

If you had a Suncom phone you remember it was bought by Bell South, which later became AT&T.
