I'll do you one better and stick with Mitsubishi.
I used to really like the look of the Montero Sport:
They don't even offer one now.
And they'd make a killing selling a truck-based mid sized SUV today. Even if it looked lame.

The new Toyota Camry with the black plastic front ends are garbage. The black plastic looks so cheap and ghetto in real life.
I don't know what they were thinking with that one. Toyota shouldn't even try to offer exciting designs. They've screwed up Lexus pretty badly, and they've really made the Camry and Avalon difficult to look at.

Everything Lexus has done in recent years
Lexus has some of the best interiors with some of the worst exterior designs on the market. The new Lexus LS is a beautiful car until you see the front end.
The worst offenders were the Lexus products that were designed at a different time but had the predator grill tacked on hastily. The LX, GX, and ES turned into horrible looking cars overnight. The Lexus RX is easily the most hideous thing on 4 wheels right now.
It took Acura several years to make their cars strange looking. Lexus went much faster and took it to another level.

Posting what happened to cars in the 80s is a little unfair. All early 80s cars went to compact and efficient due to the economy and gas shortage

I drive a 97 Toyota Land Cruiser (80 series). After the 100 Series Land Cruiser, Toyota turned a masculine off-road vehicle into a luxury fluff ball that looks like a station wagon (in its current form).
They've turned into bloated barges.
If you liked the 80 series, you'd have to go for the 4Runner TRD right now. Or the Wrangler Unlimited if you can tolerate a Jeep.

Yes. I forgot about that F150 change.
The 1996/1997 restyle was controversial. But I think the quality was overall much better with the redesign even though I much prefer the styling from the ones in the early 1990s. The Super Duty's especially from the late 1990s/early 2000s were awesome rigs. That was before Ford shite the bed on diesel engines and even offered V-10 gas motors in some of their Super Duty trucks.
I do prefer the old I-6 Ford engine to the V6 model used in the newer ones. The 4.0L V6 was always underwhelming.
I honestly wasn't wild about the 2004 redesign of the F-150 either with the blocky butt and massive blue oval on the tail gate. The interior quality didn't really improve at all, and the trucks got substantially heavier without getting better engines. The 1997 model was cohesive if nothing else.
The big issue with Fords from that era turned out to be crash tests. They were scary bad especially in the frontal offset crash conducted by IIHS. That's one of the reasons their trucks gained so much weight in 2004 - they put a much bigger, heavier frame underneath it.
They got MUCH better when the Coyote V8 came out. I honestly hated those stupid Triton 3V engines. They finally started taking V8s seriously again, although now they are pushing the turbo V6 engines.

I actually think that newer Impala looks a lot better than the older one

My mom had a 2000 Mitsu Montero Sport she bought new. SHe loved that car, in 2006 or so when she looked into trading it in, she wanted another one and was very disappointed to see that no longer made it and instead were building the Outlander . She hated everything about the Outlander and bought a 4 Runner instead Now she's on her second Dodge Journey and loves the unibody SUV, but back then she wanted a ladder frame SUV.

The worst of them all in my opinion. They took a military spec vehicle:

Nowhere near the motor in the new ones

Line the new 2019 Impala with the 305 HP 3.6 V6 against any Impala from yesteryear and see what's what.

I know it's an Escape but damn I don't care for the new ones. I like boxy suvs

All of these SUV redesigns seem to take a man truck and turn it into a station wagon type vaghicle.

That design almost killed the Silverado.

I believe the 68 SS would hold it's own.
1968 Impala SS
427 ci/ 425 hp/ 460 ft-lb
Muncie 4 spd
curb 4100
0-60 5.6
2019 Impala
3.6 L/ 305 hp/ 264 ft-lb
6 spd auto
curb 3,800
0-60 6.7
From Edmunds website
The 305-hp V6 in the Impala makes more power than competitors, but instrumented acceleration is average. Its 3,881-pound weight (a few hundred pounds more than the Avalon) may be to blame. Still, the Impala's V6 is smooth, strong and plenty capable.
Acceleration
Shifts are smooth and quick. The Impala gets up to highway speeds quickly and passes with confidence. Still, our measured 0-60 mph time of 6.7 seconds is merely average for the class.
