I remember reading about Harry R Truman as a kid

His lodge was buried under 150 feet of debris

the museum there is badass. I don’t remember every detail because I was a little kid but at the end of the driving tour they have this video, and at the end of it the curtains draw back and you’re staring right at the crater. utterly awesome

I always remember the story of there being an old guy there and all the scientists telling him to GTFO and him being like “no, this is my home.” I just hope he had no regrets

Go out like a boss vs spend his last few months or years warehoused in some institution. I'd say he made the right choice.

Only he knows though. It’s oerfectly fine choice. Which is why I said “I hope he doesn’t regret it”

I doubt he did. Attachment to the land is a very strong thing. I imagine he was at peace with it

That geologist, David Johnson, was on a ridgeline about 6 miles away. All he had time to do was radio "Vancouver, Vancouver. This is it!" before the pyroclastic flow killed him.

I think water level in Spirit Lake rose 212' after the eruption from all of the debris in the bottom. (Exact # may be off, but not by much)

I went there in '93. There wasn't shite growing in the nearby blast zone. For a few miles, there wasn't a tree left. Then, for a few more, the trees were all blown down in the same direction. "Like hairs on a dog's back", as one guy described it. After that, the trees were left standing, but the limbs were mostly blown off and there was no bark on the side facing the mountain. I'm talking about 12 or 13 miles away. It was incredible. Mother Nature's ultimate cut and fill project.

For some reason, I really did not know that Harry Truman died at Mt St Helens eruption. Seems like I would have remembered that.

I’m originally from Georgia, but my wife is from here and was camping with her parents the day it happened. She remembers how dark the sky got after the eruption.

One of the saddest photos I’ve ever seen is the boy laying dead in the back of the pickup truck. He, his brother and Dad all perished in the eruption.

Edit: The brothers and dad of the Karr family

My mom grew up 15 air miles from Mt St Helens. Luckily for her...and me, it blew the other way like everyone thought it would. They didn't even have to evacuate.

It not your fault man. Those things shouldn’t be forgotten. I just wish I hadn’t looked it up now
