Vader’s Model Desk: Fiat G.50 fighter

The Fiat G.50 Freccia ("Arrow") was a World War II Italian fighter aircraft developed and manufactured by aviation company Fiat. Upon entering service, the type became Italy’s first single-seat, all-metal monoplane that had an enclosed cockpit and retractable undercarriage.[4] On 26 February 1937, the G.50 conducted its maiden flight. During early 1938, the Freccias served in the Regia Aeronautica (the Italian Air Force) and with its expeditionary arm, the Aviazione Legionaria, in Spain, where they compared well in speed and maneuverability with their adversaries in the theatre
The fighter was extensively used on various fronts by Italy, including in Northern Europe, North Africa, the Balkans, and the Italian mainland. The G.50 commonly came up against the British Hawker Hurricane, which was fast enough to frequently outrun the Italian opponent, and could also outrange it. In addition, early in the Second World War it became apparent that the G.50 possessed inadequate armament, comprising a pair of Breda-SAFAT 12.7-mm machine guns.[6] Later models of the fighter incorporated improvements, including an increase in fuel capacity that gave rise to a substantial increase in range.

Nice build, as usual.

Pass.

Very nice!

Bravo! I enjoy seeing your models. Keep ‘em coming. I was intrigued by the early plastic kits in the 50s and 60s but enjoyed the sweet aroma of the glue full of benzene a bit more. I didn’t know any better and would probably get as high as a kite as I stayed awake and built the models into the night.

Fix it again Tony.
Impressive job Darth, especially the bottom.

Amazing that the Italians completely outclassed the Brits in seaplane racing before the war, supermarine came up with their spitfire predecessor, and Italy was unable or unwilling to keep up.

Italian ships and aircraft weren't completely tragic when compared to the Allies (their armor was pretty much garbage, though). Their biggest shortcoming was lack of fuel for training.

Vader, I enjoy seeing your pics on the model builds. I used to do a lot of models as a kid and I'm thinking of introducing my son to them soon. He's 9 right now.
What would you recommend to get back into it? There's a few hobby stores around that have a bit of supplies/paint/models/etc. As a kid i remember going to a model store or two around new orleans that had so much more stuff

Lord Vader; are you a pilot?
You sure have some nice models.
My dad and I build a large b52 when I was a kid. The wing span was something like 2 feet.

Old Car Talk joke:
Q: Why do Fiats come with rear window defrosters?
A: So you can keep your hands warm while you push it.

Thanks. You should get him into building models.

For your son, I’d start with some of the “snap-fit” kits that don’t require glue. After he’s done a few of those you can move up to actual models. I recommend Tamiya. To me they overall make the best models.

Thanks. But I’m not a pilot. In my youth though I was a tanker in the M1 and later the M1A1.

Armed with two 12.7 machine guns, this thing struggled to shoot down a kite, much less, an enemy warplane.
Beautiful plane, though!

Keep in mind this plane was designed in the 30s when the all metal, low wing monoplane fighter was just coming into the forefront of aircraft technology. And the 12.7mm is the equivalent of the .50 cal MG. Which at that time was among the heaviest armament found on most of the G.50s contemporary fighter aircraft in the 30s.
However, by even 1941-42 the G.50 was weakly armed compared to more modern fighters.

I was unaware they ever existed. Cool little design, but yeah.

The cockpit top of this version of the G.50 was open.
