The P 26/40 was an Italian World War II heavy tank (sometimes defined medium tank when compared to tanks of other nations). It was armed with a 75 mm gun and an 8 mm Breda machine gun, plus another optional machine gun in an anti-aircraft mount.[3] Design had started in 1940 but very few had been built by the time Italy signed the armistice with the Allies in September 1943 and the few produced afterwards were used by Germany.

That’s… an interesting camo pattern. Almost looks like a dried lakebed. In what kind of terrain were they intended to be operational?

Still amazed at your paint jobs. I wish I had the patience/skill to do the same level work. Very nice once again!

As far as I can tell, this pattern was used only by German units in Northern Italy who were equipped with captured Italian vehicles following Italy surrendering.

Now that is a rare subject indeed. What did they make like a hundred of those? But I love the paint job. After my last F4G wild weasel build, I am working on an Australian Centurion tank in Vietnam service. Going to try some mud and pigment effect with the south vietnamese red clay/rice patty mud. AFV club kit.

Do you have a pic of your whole collection? I feel I’ve seen you do this for years and would love to see the whole fleet.

Just a handful. Italy surrender before the Italian Army could even use them.

I’d have to do a panoramic pic to get the whole collection into one photo. I have shelves like these all around my model room…

Here’s where I build them…

And here’s the ones I have yet to build…

A childhood friend had a Tobruk tank battle board game, and the only thing I remember about the game is that you did not want the Italian armor.

There was an Italian tank nicknamed “the flaming coffin”.

I believe that would be this one…

When it came to tanks, the Italians had two big issues

1. They were not good at making hardened steel for armor plating

2. They lacked the ability to effectively weld armor. That’s why their tanks were all riveted.

Not many were made. It was Italy’s pitiful attempt to produce a somewhat useful “heavy” tank. Italy surrendered before the Italian Army could even field it. I think there were something like 20-60 made before Italy capitulated. The Germans took the ones already completed and had the factory continue production. But the Germans quickly realized it would be worthless against Allied tanks in frontline combat. So, what they did was issue it to rear-echelon formations to use in anti-partisan operations. That’s what this particular tank was used for in northern Italy in the final weeks of the war.

I’m sure you were more than capable of helping them out with that.

I had a world history teacher in high school that said Italian tanks had 1 forward gear and 4 in reverse.

I post these threads for two reasons:

1. For folks like you who enjoy them.

2. To bother the haters who don’t.

I’ve heard the same joke about French tanks.

But unlike the Italians, the French actually had some good tanks, at least for their day.
