A Utah charter school that incorporates Black History Month into its lesson plans is now facing backlash from some after the school announced it was allowing parents to opt students out of the curriculum.

Maria Montessori Academy Director Micah Hirokawa announced the decision in a Friday post on the school's private Facebook page, according to local news outlet the Standard-Examiner.

Hirokawa wrote that he "reluctantly" sent a letter to families stating that administrators were allowing them "to exercise their civil rights to not participate in Black History Month at the school."

Hirokawa said in the post that "a few families" had asked not to participate in the curriculum, though he declined to tell the Standard-Examiner the exact number of parents who had contacted the school or the reasons they gave for making the request.

Would Twitter complain if they gave black families the option to not be forced to trying on the magical undergarments

Yes folks, white people still DO have civil rights. I'm glad someone recognizes this.

Principal sounds Japanese. He better make sure the internment camps during WWII are in the curriculum too.

I don't think learning about slavery, Jim Crow, etc. is the worst thing considering how recent it was... but you basically spend a two weeks on it every year from 2nd grade - senior year in public schools. it's a bit much.

The only fair thing to do here is to also let the black students opt out of white, Asian, Middle Eastern, and Jewish history months......

Is the treatment of Cajuns (As recent as the 20tb century) discussed in school curriculum across the country? How Native Americans killed each other long before big bad white man did? Surely we don’t want these facts lost on people.

Good. I'd much prefer an American History month that covers all American's and their contributions throughout the month.

That’s bullshite. There is no “civil right” to opt out of a curriculum.

The world is going to be a far better place when people realize Twitter is not an accurate reflection of society as a whole.

Twitter is always pissed about everything. The Twitter logo will be on the front gates of the re-education and "truth reconciliation" camps.

Are you saying parents can't have a say in what is taught to their kids?

Is it okay for anything to be taught even if it's a totally fictional account of history?

Yep, slavery and the cause/effect of in the colonies and US are already a huge part of the regular curriculum. Black History Month is just pandering. If you’re not teaching black history in the process of teaching American History, then you’re not teaching history.
