Are you really suggesting that anthropology, economics, geography, history, political science, psychology, and sociology are of no benefit to society?

I would argue that folks that have psychology and sociology degrees (that are the base for therapeutic licensure and social work) have saved lives in the general public. They're not flawless but I don't think I'm being extreme in saying that.
I'd say that's a valuable public service.

If you can’t see how education of people in these broad disciplines impact your life positively every single day, there is nothing anyone can say to explain it to you.

I mean if nobody is in those programs then they probably shouldn’t exist. The funding is better invested elsewhere.
Posted on 8/17/25 at 10:09 am to Lonnie Utah
Good. These popped up after the government started guaranteeing student loans and the universities jacked their prices up and invented these nonsense degree plans to just increase profits. No other reason

What should be an elective course should not be a major. And that’s what some of this shite has turned into

Then cut the schools down in size so that admissions are competitive.
All the holding spots for bimbos to have someplace to go while they pursue their MRS's don't accomplish much.

Time to rethink what is a university.

It seems to me that they are cutting programs that are nonproductive at certain schools. Not cutting said program across all schools. Or am I missing something?

You only see education in so far that is drives economic outcomes and make GDP line go up so world must be better.
This is short sighted and the total disdain that folks like you on the right have for the arts is why conservatives have lost the Academy and Hollywood and the arts to the far left.
Your hostility to anything different is why you will never build broad political power.
There is more to life than just gdp line go up so world is better.

No, they are cutting legitimate STEM degrees.
If they are only graduating 1-2 degrees a year, why not consolidate the degrees?

we also need teachers, lawyers, writers, etc.
Debatable.
Our schools suck, our lawyers are crooks and our writers all spout Marxist propaganda. We'd be better off without most of them

Do you understand what the liberal arts were founded for/serve as the foundation of? They were concentrated and grouped together as liberal arts to help ensure that the population of a society were capable of reason, idea generation, and principled action in a free (liberated) society.
Having more people in a population able to critically view history, discern lessons from the past, perform vigorous thought exercises on ideas about society, and the like is better for a country than restricting access to this type of learning to the uber wealthy and connected.

I have no problem with that list other than maybe the mining degrees and that is only because I don't know much about the education or need for it.

You can’t have a functioning free society and a rule of law without a free press and lawyers to protect free citizens. You can’t have either of those, or any other high level thinking people, without teachers.

How can it be that studying philosophy is worthless, but we’re also 100% sure that Marxism is evil? If you haven’t studied it, you’re not qualified to evaluate different philosophies, and you’re more likely to be manipulated.
How can we confidently vote against “forever wars” without ever learning about our history?
How can our country be the proud paragon of culture for all the world to emulate without teaching art?
Will our country’s top diplomats be completely ignorant of other cultures and political strategy? Outclassed at every turn by adversaries who have actually studied and prepared for their roles?
Should corporate America return to the 1950’s where male-dominated corporations completely whiffed on opportunities to market products to women? Should we ignore the contributions that gender studies have made to health care, criminal justice, education, etc?
It’s not that hard to find a compelling argument for any of the courses of study listed. It’s hard to believe that it’s 2025, and we have to argue that education is more valuable than ignorance.

These threads are always great for sorting out those who actually read and dive deeper into a subject beyond the post title.

This whole thread makes me sad.
Ignorant people love their ignorance and have made indisputable conclusions made on the flimsiest attempts at understanding. They are certain that their ignorance is the right way to live.
Motherfrickers in this thread are literally arguing against public funding for teaching history. HISTORY!
