How do you prove paternity before birth?

I think there is a paternity test you can take during pregnancy. Although I know nothing about it.

Maybe they'll make you backpay like they do regular child support if paternity isn't discovered until after birth?

Louisiana and all other states need this morally righteous law

So dead beats who skip on child support or going to pay a couple grand up front

Are you suggesting a woman would lie or make up who the father was? Sounds like misogyny to me.

I guess you’re right. A woman has never lied before.

Certainly not when there's money to be had.

Serious question. If a guy thinks the child might not be his or just generally contests the child support order, don't they do a paternity test?

I keep seeing mention of a women "putting someone's name on the birth certificate" in here, but everyone I know who has had an unplanned child with a guy who doesn't want to be involved has had to do paternity tests to be granted anything. I've never seen a court just take a woman's word for it with no proof and demand child support, but I could be wrong.

I think it depends which state. There was an article from Illinois where a man was put on the certificate and couldn't be the father and was told he had to pay anyway so the state could recoup their losses.

But is that story the norm? Genuinely asking. I don't feel one way or the other about this law in the OP, but I haven't heard of men routinely being forced to pay child support if they contest it without proven paternity.

That's the entire reason shows like my boy Maury exist.

I don't know, but the judge obviously thought it was normal enough to berate him after telling him they were stealing $30k from him because he got lied on.

The point is that being put on the birth certificate in most cases puts the burden of proof on the man.

I think paternity should be proven before anyone's name is allowed to be on the birth certificate, FWIW. It should be part of the birth process if the man is present, and if not, nobody's name goes on the certificate until paternity tests are done.

But there are some posts in this thread implying that child support should not exist at all.. and I just don't know about that. I see both sides. I know dudes who are active fathers who still have to pay child support because they don't get the kids 50-50, and that sucks. I also know women who got pregnant by a boyfriend that bolted and wants no part in the child's life at all. Hard for me to say those women don't deserve a single penny for raising the child.

Tough thing to have a solid opinion on, really. Lots of nuance.

I'm not opposed to child support in most cases either. That being said, when you hook up with some random guy or date some thug, get pregnant, and then demand they pay child support and run around screeching about dead beats, you deserve all the ridicule that comes your way.

Poor choices lead to poor outcomes all around.

There are laws already in place to provide for the child and that's obviously not enough because here comes another law to punish men for seducing poor little innocent women. I have an issue with that, especially given the legal arguments for abortion.

only takes one and I’m pretty sure I’m capable of it. If I knock up a chick, I’ll own it, so if it happens to be you, you’re keeping it, and 9 months later we’ll never talk again nor will I allow you to talk with the child before the child turns 18.
You've never been pregnant. I don’t know any woman who is going through 9 months of bonding with her unborn baby, a delivery, and just handing her baby off to be cared for by someone else. Besides, how many men are really willing to give up their free time and be 100% a single parent.

You know this already a real thing, right? Adoptions happen every day. Not statistically high, but it does happen.

I also know a couple who was set to adopt a kid, but the state had to contact the father first to make it legit. The father didn't know he had a child and as soon as he did, took it.

Seems racist. Since one particular race has the most kids out of wedlock.

Not if it results in abortions being cheaper. This bill requires an amendment.
