I was an army officer.

You don't send vital intelligence about a nuclear powered carrier's readiness over NIPR/unclassified comms. You just don't.

Whether the crew decided to applaud or not, is completely irrelevant. I don't give a frick what the crew thought. The army is not a democracy.

I'll tell you this: There have been a hundred other US ships that have made port or probably had cases in the last 3 months. You didn't hear a goddamn peep from any of them. Why? Because China, Russia, Iran, and lots of others would love to know our military readiness status. They are thrilled by Cozier's tantrum, specifically because it lets them know we likely have other ships with the same issues.

Cozier can go frick himself.

one thing i havent heard about is the situation "why" they went into a port with full blown pandemic

what was the urgent need that couldnt wait?

what was the situation there as far as liberty?

were any sailors allowed to go ashore and if so why?

was the virus brought on board from contaminated supplies and if so why were they not held in quarantine for a week until deemed safe?

so many things there that show this capt was a moron that should never have been in command of a supply ship much less a carrier

Doesn't the navy have this whole thing between the "black shoes" (surface personnel I think) and "brown shoes?" (aviation I think).

I don't know which the Captain of an Aircraft carrier is since it involves both, but maybe he pissed off someone with the opposite color shoes.

The OPSEC angle is tenuous. Most if not all of this info was already publicly available. Promptly quarantining crew ashore was arguably best course of action to preserve combat power. From earlier thread
quote:

A timeline on when this info was publicly available and released by Navy.
24 Mar Navy reports 3 sailors onboard COVID positive Navy Times

26 Mar Sec Nav acknowledges carrier stopped at Guam "no one aboard the Roosevelt will be allowed to leave pier side." Military.com

When I saw Sec Nav's interview in front of the hospital ship in NY harbor go from good will story to a focus on the plight of TR crew I knew the CAPT was likely a goner.

My take is that it is a gigantic carrier that everyone in the world with some military tech knows it is in port. I do not think there is any kind of strategical disadvantage to the knowledge he shared. I think be is an honorable man. I would serve under him gladly and also buy him a beer and shake his hand.

He should be relieved of his carrier duties and he knows that and understood the sacrifice. He likely knows who would leak it and is taking the fall. The SECNAV needs his asswhipped and removed.

Time for all leadership to stop dragassing and get their shite together. We are being reactionary against all of this shite instead of proactive. God forbid we have to go to war. We need leaders right now not politicians.

1. Cozier is a fricking idiot and deserves to be fired. Loose lips sink ships.

2. Modly was a fricking idiot for ranting for 15 minutes to the ship. He should have just said loose lips sink ships.

Resign. Keep rank. Clean record. Keep all Benefits. Honorable Discharge.

Option 2: Court marshaled. Dis-honorable discharge.

Propaganda. Trying to outshine China, got shutdown by the china virus instead. Doesn't appear it was his choice to make the port call either. Whomever that was should also be canned.

1- none of us have enough information to say whether Crozier should have been fired. Time will tell and I'm happy to wait to have someone look into that later.

2- all of us have enough information to know that Modly needs to be fired, yesterday. Even if you ignore what he said about Crozier to the crew (and that was itself plenty to be fired), he also insulted all the sailors. I have never heard of a civilian defense official speak so insultingly and condescendingly to servicemembers.

I agree with this. The details matter on Crozier.

Modly's speech was just an idiotic decision on so many levels. How did he think it was a good idea to show up and say that?

Hopefully the resignation helps resolve this and Navy can move on.

The SEC was correct and there was a shite ton of pussies on that boat that should not be in the military.

All the complaining and back talking during his speech says it all.

Everyone keeps giving the Navy shite for getting off in Vietnam, but any port is likely the same outcome. Hawaii, guam, etc. all have Covid. You have what like 3,000 people on the carrier? Someone is going to catch it.

So what's the right thing to do? I honestly am not sure. But I think they should have likely stopped all mission activity and headed to a port with a realistic hospital to prepare for the worst case scenario.

The navy has tons of ships with 100s of men and a bunch of ships with 1000s of men. Statistically this was going to happen and become a PR nightmare. Its someone further ups fault for not planning this further ahead.

If the navy made CNN because of something the commander was bitching about then he should be gone.

No way someone with that laxk of discretion should have been a captain in the first place.
Also not happy about SecNav issuing an apology for what he said. He spoke the truth, and if our military can't hear the truth, we are all in bigger trouble than I thought.
