and Kamikaze attacks really weren't that successful.

By the end of WWII, the US fleet was approximately 1,200 major combat ships. Sinking 34 ships (and none of these were Battleships or large aircraft carriers) was pretty inconsequential.

The inexperienced pilots would go after the first ship they saw, which was usually a radar picket destroyer. It was a hell of a psychological weapon, though.

My grandpa, who was a naval pilot, absolutely despised the Japanese. So much so that he refused to eat rice, and would get pissed when we wanted to take karate growing up.

I brought a girlfriend (who was Korean) home once the summer before college and my grandparents happened to be there to visit. Not a fun evening.

I know exactly what you are saying. As kids, my brother and I built our share of plastic models including Mustangs, Corsairs, Spitfires, etc. One day my brother brought home a Japanese Zero to add to the mix and though my Dad never said a word, you could tell he wasn't pleased with the purchase.

And people get pissy when black people are angry and whites.

The kind of psychological thinking is deep rooted and definitely hard to break.

My grandfather was on the Lexington. Had 6 bronze stars on a ship! Those men endured hell.

My uncle was turret gunner with some amazing stories. When I bought a mitsubishi as a teenager he looked at me like I was the spawn of satan. I did not even think about the fact that he was literally shooting at mitsubishi planes at my age.

Now days the yahoo that hands out uniforms to the troops can claim they "went to war". My how the times have changed.

I know exactly. I work for a Japanese owned company now and he would turn over in his grave if he knew.

That’s awesome and the ship used is owned by Paul Allen who apparently owns several research ships. This is the one used for this discovery

RV Petrel

RV Petrel or R/V Petrel (IMO: 9268629, MMSI: 235102789)[1] is a 76.45-metre (250.8 ft) research vessel owned by Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen. The ship is named after the sea bird Petrel. In 2016, Allen purchased the offshore service vessel formerly named Seven Petrel from Subsea 7, a subsea engineering, construction and services company. In 2017, the ship completed an extensive retrofitting to become a deep submergence research vessel. Today it is the only privately-owned vessel in the world equipped to explore 6,000 meters depths. It also serves as a testing bed for new deep sea equipment that has never been deployed on any other ship.[2]

And he owns an even more impressive one called Octopus

Octopus is a 414 foot (126 m) megayacht owned by Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen. It is one of the world's largest and most recognizable yachts. Launched in 2003, Octopus is a private vessel that is regularly lent out for exploration projects, scientific research initiatives and rescue missions.[

ROV work like that would have been so much more fun than staring at oil fields.

Same with my grandpa. Was on the belly of one of the bombers over the Pacific and lined the crosshairs to drop the bombs. My parents purchased our 1st Honda when he was alive....he despised them for buying it.

Back in the 90's at LSU, my film class team decided to do a documentary on the USS KIDD. I showed up with the Sony camera, and one of the ship's vets told me, "You go the wrong brand of camera there." I felt about one inch tall.

My father was on a PBM in the Pacific. It was a flying boat/patrol bomber.

I emailed a friend of mine tonight about this find. He was a pilot in Dad's squadron. He is 98 years old and was at Pearl Harbor/Ford Island when it was bombed.

They were in the Philippines in late 1944 when the Kamakazis were flying. My Dad was shot down, but rescued by another flying boat (PBY).

I feel like I'm in a time capsule every time I speak to him.

If a bit more were known about far Eastern History, the Korean girlfriend and the American soldier would have found they shared a hatred of the Japanese. Like deep down, can't get any deeper hatred.

From the women slaves used by the Japanese as Comfort Women to the Korean families who for much of the 1900s who suffered from Japanese occupation. the hatred ran deep.

My Father fought there. He hated the Japanese, but after buying pieces of crap American made cars, he bought a Toyota and it held together for fifteen years. The plastics in it started failing when I inherited it.
