I lost a friend to suicide last week and I'm sick of people using mental illness as a derogatory term here on TD. This board should be ashamed of themselves for not understanding the stigma attached to mental health. I'm out. Bye.

What's drastically changed from the 80's to now?

Social Media.

I wish I could find a graph that plots suicides with the usage of social media.

Not a graph but an interesting study and read.

Cyberbullying, when directly or indirectly linked to suicide, has been referred to as cyberbullicide.14 Hinduja and Patchin19 reported results from a survey given to approximately 2000 middle school children that indicated that victims of cyberbullying were almost 2 times as likely to attempt suicide than those who were not. These results also indicated that cyberbullying offenders were 1.5 times as likely to report having attempted suicide than children who were not offenders or victims of cyberbullying. Although cyberbullying cannot be identified as a sole predictor of suicide in adolescents and young adults, it can increase risk of suicide by amplifying feelings of isolation, instability, and hopelessness for those with preexisting emotional, psychological, or environmental stressors.20

I agree in that joking about suicide and using the term "retard" is derogatory, but I am also an adult who can a) ignore it/not let it bother me and b) excuse myself if I need to.

While that study shows an increase, 1.5 and 2 times the rate isn’t some astronomical statistics significance in regards to a population of 2,000 kids where how many attempted suicide?

It’s not like smoking where lung cancer occurrence was something like 10-15 times the non smokers rate

I've lost a sister to suicide, it's awful. But one thing about this board is you can't take offense to posts that aren't personally attacking you.

The survey I quoted was just a snippet and a part of the study as a whole. The complete study has more info and cases but it was also done in 2012 so I'm sure there are a lot more info and stats out there now. I'll bet there are more recent ones that show a pretty strong correlation between Social media and suicide. Particularly pre-teen to early 20s I would guess.

You're crazy if you think that's the main reason we should be ashamed of ourselves.

You still have people with cave man intellect that post on here(go to the poli board to see that on full display). People that always chime in how selfish suicide is and can’t grasp in their tiny brains that many that commit suicide may have suffered from a real mental illness.

People that still think one suffering from depression can just “snap out of it”.

My ex-wife in residence is legitimately paranoid and when people refer to her as "crazy" I realize it is a true statement.
