I did some work for a GC that built 5 different 60 lot section 8 housing developments that were managed by a property management company when we were done. When doing our warranty work I always talked to the property manager. They have a major waiting list and evict people left and right. One of the main things they evict people for is grease fire damage from frying foods. It's crazy!

If you enter into a government subsidy program, you should lose certain liberties. Like how you live, what you eat for food, what kind of car you drive. I guess they did that at one point with government cheese. You would lineup for your welfare food. I'm not sure why that one went away.

Look, I completely agree that there are tons of people in public housing who are only there because of poor life choices, and zero financial management skills, but a pack a day habit, average of $6 per day is only $186/month. That ain't exactly a rent payment in non subsidized housing. The much bigger issue than a smoker living in public housing is the rampant fraud and abuse of the public housing qualifications program. Let's fix that before blaming a smoking habit for forcing someone onto the government's teat.

Smoking should be banned everywhere.

Don't we want em to die quicker? Seems we would give em cigs and heroin with their keys

It won't. This is one of those feel good laws. "Look, we the law makers are doing something"!

Honestly they missed the trifecta of making middle class parents feel good about their leaders. If you add in a clause that says the poor people will pay a fine for smoking that will directly go to schools then you could get reelected for years.

1) Law that effects only poor people (especially people that have a reputation for committing crimes) CHECK

2) punishes smokers CHECK

3) has a nebulous provision that help the children CHECK

I agree completely. If they require housing assistance, they shouldn't have $300 a month to spare on cigarettes. It wouldn't be a bad idea to study cost effectiveness of requiring smokers on government assistance for health care to complete cessation programs. I know and love lots of smokers. It's hard as hell to quit, but can the government possibly be generating more revenue off the taxes to ignore how costly poor, sick smokers are?

My insurance charges more for smokers. It's a penalty, and I wish they could figure out how to penalize smokers on Medicaid too without people freaking out.
