That list is terrible. I mean Birmingham is in the top 100 for God's sake
Is Birmingham not an affordably city with a reasonably decent quality of life and job market? I don't spend much time there. I lived pretty well in Memphis on a lot less than what I make now.
I'd rather live in NYC than Austin, but NYC is expensive enough to not be a good value over a place like Austin. Same with San Francisco.

Sure, especially with the lack of income tax in Texas.
But they have NY > BR, not just Austin.
Hell, I live in Houston and the numbers are misleading due to the distance covered by the metro area.
So yeah, you can find extremely cheap places to live, but you're looking at~1 hour commute.

The ratings appear to reflect a value/quality of life rating balance. Not an intangible preference.
I could easily live very well in Baton Rouge on less than I'm earning now. That's not the case with NYC or San Francisco. Washington DC or Austin would be a better balance.
New Orleans seems to be so low in the ratings because it didn't provide a good value/quality of life balance. Meaning the wages, costs of living, and amenities were not good good to justify the quality of life problems (crime, health, corruption, etc.) considering the balance struck by most other cities. That's a fair assessment.

Yea, I completely agree with that but that is why it is flawed.

Austin at #1? List is shite, Austin's traffic is very nearly as bad as Baton Rouge's.
The fact you can send your kids to public school within Austin proper, the job market, and feeling virtually at zero risk of being a victim of violent crime heavily outweighs traffic.
Plus, I live where traffic isn't a problem, not the outskirts.

Same thing for me in Houston. Everyone complains about the traffic, but there are plenty of options where you can avoid it. They don't value their time over the price point
My wife just turned down a good job offer there.
Would have been an outstanding place to live for the price too, and there is so much to do with a good combo of nightlife, music, and outdoor activities.
I'll always choose to live in a part of a city with minimal traffic issues. H

Interestingly enough, there are more than a few early retirement financial bloggers who see no issue with paying a little more to gather time, and I don't disagree. To a point of course.

My SO recently was approached about a position that would have increased her salary by about 50% in New Orleans and said no thank you.

I might consider it for a 50% raise, but not if I didn't have family in Louisiana.

Stupid move if you're under 40. That's dumb as a box of rocks territory right there

Not according to US News.

that link lists Jackson, MS as a top 100 place to live in the US.
I mean come on

Wow what an argument. Take food and music out of New Orleans and that number drops significantly.
Food and music >>> LSU

It also depends on what each makes. If Abita makes 100k and her salary is going from 50 to 75k, it might not be a good move because his new job in Nola might be making substantially less or might not be available at all.

Or maybe we want to live elsewhere before starting a family (if we decide to do so), and moving back to LA now would likely mean a permanent move, which we aren't ready for?
But yeah, a general simplification of us being dumb is probably the right answer.

New Orleans too.

These lists, are always awful. Probably ranked based chamber of commerce 100 dollar handshakes.

Austin, Tx. is number 1, over some of those other places in the top thirty? ridiculous. Hot and boring.
Posted on 2/8/17 at 6:50 pm to AbitaFan08
so your SO is the bread winner? Cool deal, you should quit your job and be a stay at home dad
