US doctor residency programs are being taken over by foreign nationals

Not as many young Americans willing to spend 10+ years training to become a doctor. Family Practice and Pediatrics don’t pay enough to be worth it anymore. Easier to become a NP and make good money.

I am admittedly not at all knowledgeable about medical residency programs. What criteria do decision makers utilize to choose residents?
Grades?
Experience?
Political influence?

I know many foreign doctors that are absolutely great doctors that I would prefer take care of my family. And I know some disasters that shouldn’t be anywhere near a patient.
The biggest issue I have is that we have tons of Americans that would love to be a physician yet we have somehow have to go outside the country to fill these spots?
Why have all these spots in the first place? Well it’s because it’s cheap labor for hospitals and that’s why it is the way it is.

This isnt a surprise. Americans are more interested in being influencers than trained professionals

Are there American college students who do well on the MCAT getting shut out of medical school or residencies? I’ve never heard of that being the case, and, if not, I’m not sure why this is a problem.
It’s no secret that American schools aren’t exactly pumping out huge numbers of internationally competitive math and science students.

Residency is different from med school. Residencies are in certain specialties are extremely competitive.

I will say some rural hospitals/clinics have a difficult time finding staff. You’ll see many foreign doctors there.

Would be concerning but I don’t believe those numbers. What really stands out is seeing a competitive program like urology at the Cleveland Clinic high on the list. Their data shows almost 80% foreign students but a quick search of their website shows most of their residents are US students, so something is way off with the site they are getting their data from.

You can still get in but need top 25% MCAT and solid GPA plus some volunteer or research stuff

A lot of those are shitty programs and need FMGs to fill and survive. But diversity is such a push in medical schools and residencies. I’m glad I’m near end of my career. Probably couldn’t get in now since I’m the wrong demographic.
I personally don’t want to see the foreign doctors. They talk a good game but they aren’t as good as they think they are.

My son is 19 and very mature, highly intelligent. Every doctor I work with told him don’t go to med school. Being a white straight male he’s at the bottom of the list to get in and tuition is too high. Quicker route to less debt and a better lifestyle in nursing then grad school. They even discouraged their own kids from med school.

It doesn’t help that more women go to medical school 55/45 and then 3/4 of them either bounce or shift to part time positions as soon as they have kids.

For a white male? Ha.
Top 25% MCAT score is around a 509. "Solid" GPA is maybe a 3.6 or 3.7. "Some volunteer or research stuff" is a baseline requirement these days for anyone.
A while male with a 509 MCAT, 3.6-3.7 GPA, and "some volunteer or research stuff" is going to have a hell of a tough time getting into medical school barring any nepotism or strong familial connections to the school.
If a white male wants to be viewed as a "strong" applicant, they're going to need a 514+, 3.9+ GPA, and some highly unique or differentiating ECs to distinguish themselves from the pack (ie, college athlete, year long medical mission trip building homes in Ethiopia, name on a published paper in the New England Journal of Medicine, etc).

Those are specific residencies at specific programs. I don't know the data but that could be a very misleading graph. Many residency programs do not even interview foreign medical graduates.
