This is the bar that's marked on the map from when the initial explosion happened:

If you have to shelter in place, I guess a bar isn't a bad place to do it.

38000 gallons of fuel?
It's why takeoff is by far the most dangerous part of the flight - can't really save it if something goes wrong AND a big belly full of fuel to boot.

I’m in the airport waiting to fly there, just got rescheduled to Cincinnati.

Spoke with my daughter, her father in law actually flew this run to Hawaii for UPS. It crashed on takeoff, 38,000 gallons is a legit number. Entire downtown is shelter in place.

Check the mechanic that's missing his 10mm socket.

doubt it was full, eight hours isn’t that long of a flight for a scud but it had plenty

Could have tankered some fuel to Hawaii

If this is accurate, I hope the piece(s) of shite that screwed up is forced to confront the victims and/or their families and explain themselves

If it hasn't already been mentioned in this thread, there was a UPS plane crash into Birmingham Airport on approach several years ago.

Coincidentally, I had a shipment to me , business related, that was on that plane .
The shipper only got rebated the value of the item because he purchased the additional insurance

Video showing the crash reminds me of the old Concorde crash videos. Just haunting

BHM was pilot error. This appears initially to not be.

Daily Mail has a close up of the video showing the left engine on fire above the glowing red left wing.

Watching the Governor's press conference right now.

- 3 likely dead (on plane), 11 in the hospital with pretty serious injury.

- Several local departments: Fire/Police/EMS are coordinating.

- Telling people to stay the frick away due to things that are still potentially explosive at the sight and due to clean up.

- Some hazards at local business near the site. Going door to door in the area to check on folks in the immediate area around the site (residential and business).

- After initial explosions at the site they've been able to reduce some of the fire.

- There's multiple bulk fuel storage businesses in the area and that was part of the issue with the explosions and burn afterward.

Side note, my Dad worked down at a railyard near the site several years ago when a plane went off the runway and crashed/caught on fire. It burned for something like 5 days.

That's not contained to the engine. I'm not sure engine fire suppression would have helped at all at that point.
