re: UPS plane crashes in Louisville?

So much speculation. Only thing we know is they had a situation and obvious fire, and a decision was made to try and fly it off probably per their training (Past V1 (point of no return) at V2 (take off safe speed). God speed, those aviators tried their best with the Sh#t sandwich they were handed.

If it is accurate that this was an MD-11, I have to wonder if this will finally push UPS and FedEx to retire the rest of them in their fleets.

Not really. Though they are essentially rebuilt DC-10s ( which were very problematic) MD- 11 have been relatively problem-free given flight hours flown. The last fatal incident in the world was 2016 and the last one from a U.S. carrier was 2009 and before that 1999.
Fedex and UPS put these things through the ringer over the years, but they are old girls at this point.

why the shelter in place?
It was flying to Hawaii so probably loaded with fuel. Capacity is about 38,000 gallons of jet fuel.
Also probably verifying what type of cargo was onboard to ensure it doesn’t present a separate risk to people.

Maybe.
Also worth noting for folks, UPS Worldport is something like the 6th busiest cargo airport in the world. If you get a piece of mail through UPS air, it's almost certainly going to go through Worldport here.
This is incredibly traffic, but it's also logistically going to be a big deal in terms of cargo and flights out of Louisville International as a whole.

Stop politicizing these tragic deaths and pissing on their graves for the sake of some Facebook like points. It's disgusting, and you should be ashamed of yourself.
Thank you.

Your already monitoring multiple displays it would be hard to also be watching a camera. But a bright arse red light that you push to extinguish the fire is right in view.

Wow. Must have passed V2 and didn’t have enough runway to abort take off so the only option was try to get her off the ground and return immediately.
That’s sad.
That’s sad.

We are very, very lucky here that it happened where it did out at the airport.

Possibly but I wasn't referring to just this accident. There's been wrong engines shut down, passengers having to alert flight crews of engine anomalies. Having pilots actually see the engines seems like it would be a no brainer.

This is the bar that's marked on the map from when the initial explosion happened:

38000 gallons of fuel? That is going to burn for a while.

3 pilots, no word on ground casualties.
Left engine completely fell off during takeoff roll. Aircraft was previously on a maintenance delay for the same engine. Somebody messed up
Edit- No junpseaters, only 3 on board

doubt it was full, eight hours isn’t that long of a flight for a scud but it had plenty

Just got a new Emergency Alert update:
quote:
Shelter in place update: The shelter in place has been further revised. The new shelter in place is now from Outer Loop northbound to the Ohio River. Continue to shelter in place and avoid contact with smoke from incident near the airport. Areas south of Outer Loop are now cleared from the shelter in place.

With no air traffic controllers to guide the planes, what could go wrong?
I don’t even think Jon Cusack could help a plane that bursts into flames on takeoff.
