why the shelter in place?

You basically have the airport right next to I-65, UofL, one of two major Ford plants, CSX shipyards, all in that general area.
The residential is close but since they built UPS Worldport there's a decent barrier around it and doesn't look like it went into any of the residential over there.
Still, a flight crew and probably a decent number on the ground are no longer with us.

Sure. I was just pointing out that it didn't hit the houses in that area (when you mentioned it being heavily residential).

Mom got that one while I was on the phone checking with her.

My guess is from the fuel that is burning. And no telling what other chemicals. There's visible ash falling across the county.
It's big enough that you can see the smoke where we live (Southeastern part of the county, airport is on the Mid-Southwestern side) but it's blowing northward (towards the Ohio).

Its so sad. Likely 4 to 5 souls lost on the plane.

A flight from Louisville to Hawaii is a heckin' long-haul, so the typical pilot crew would be three or four (Captain, First Officer, and one or two relief pilots) to allow for mandated rest breaks. The plane would also likely carry a loadmaster for the cargo.

It's 2025. We no longer rely on the 6 o clock news hour for information on a neatly-packed narrative: We've all seen the footage in this thread alone. This is not about politics or air traffic control, as neither had anything to do with this tragedy.
Pathetic.

With no air traffic controllers to guide the planes, what could go wrong?
I didn't know ATC controlled engines catching on fire.

Yeah it would've been fully fueled as well for that kind of trip, which would basically make it a massive bomb.
This was from the backside of the airport:

Damn. After the initial explosion, it looks like one of the wings keeps momentum and causes a secondary explosion.
Is that a populated industrial area it crashed into?

Are you all the way out in J Town or farther east?

Just outside of downtown JTown. Off Billtown.

It's mostly parking and a junk area for the airport. So hopefully that will minimize potential casualties.
