The bottom line is that it doesn't have to be an either/or situation. Plenty of good parents have kids who are involved in offline activities while still spending an hour or two in front of a screen each day. If my previous posts have insinuated otherwise, my apologies.
Agreed. And maybe I was projecting my own perception of this thread as well.

Sounds like you need a different neighborhood.
yeah there aren't a whole lot of kids my sons age in our neighborhood. He has a couple buddies that bang on the door regularly, but that's it. I wish there were more kids for him to play with. Things can get stale with the 2 we have.
As long as I can forcefully avoid social media for my kids, I will. They won't have a social media account as long as I have a say so. And it will be because of the drama on facebook, but my boys are already white males. I don't need them posting shite on facebook that they will have to answer for when they are adults trying to start a career.

Who would you rather take a golf lesson from? A golfer, or some kid who is an expert at golf clash?
Who would you rather show you how to cook? A person who cooks regularly, or a person who watches the Food Network?
Who would you rather lecture you about parenting? A person who has experience raising kids on his own, or some kid who talks down to you based on an article he read and his ignorant ideals of what it takes to be a good parent?
Steve Jobs was a parent. Bill Gates is a parent. They were quoted in the article.
How about I call my mom and have her hit the submit button for me. Will that change the truthfulness of the content?

There is a lot of data that says you are wrong.

willfully making that decision giving the known data is poor parenting.
What does that data say? I've read quite a few articles, and at best they can establish <2 hours of screen time per day is correlated with higher cognitive ability. However, they can't say anything about the content of the screen time nor can they establish any causation.

That's a horrible parenting decision. And, yes, I can judge parents on it.
It's no different than saying letting your kid watch an hour or two of TV per day is a horrible parenting decision. I highly doubt you truly believe that.

All the people in here terrified of ipads and iphones, would also tell you "guns dont kill people, people kill people!!!!!!!"

I don't really know where I stand on the issue, but I think we live in a world where people like to parrot things they hear that sound good without actually using independent thought.
I think too much of anything can be a bad thing, especially social media and technology. However, it is also this really remarkable thing our modern society has created.
Yes, we want kids outside. We want physical activity and stereotypical childhoods. However, stomping around going "IN MY DAYY!!!!.." just sounds silly.
Drive past any school or daycare/aftercare center and I assure you there's no shortage of kids running around playing like they have for centuries.

It certainly can be.
Are we about to pretend that the vast majority of children who are glued to iPads all day are using Rosetta Stone? And what about the kids playing fortnite for hours a day?
Is this were we discuss the outliers and ignore the bulk of users and their activities on these devices?

This is not simply "commenting":

We got a lot of lazy parents out there bros; they hand their kids an ipad or vidya game and go on about their day, because that's infinitely easier than, you know, actual parenting. Never mind that the child is being stunted socially and intellectually. And no, forcing junior to play baseball year-round because you think he'll buy you a bigger house one day is not an example of good parenting.

I'd put it at quite rare.

I think there are a ton of absent parents from rich households. Especially the fathers. But money helps to hide the negative consequences of this
It sounds like you get a lot of information from made-for-TV movies.

Common sense. Obviously the use of it has to be closely monitored by a parent. But you can read or learn almost anything in a device the size of magazine.

If your mom submitted her opinion instead of just submitting yours it would

That depends. Does the golfer average triple digits? Does the cook burn every dish?
There are a lot of shitty parents out there. The fact that they biologically produce doesn't make them experts, or even competent, at raising children.

Let me suggest that I have a good understanding of both of my parents' opinions on this matter considering they raised me at a time when cell phones, TVs and video games were ubiquitous.

I agree with this approach wholeheartedly. My kid is almost 7, never had a video game system, doesn't use an iPad, doesn't watch TV during the week. He plays outside as much as possible, plays sports, and loves to draw, read, and play board games. I'm going to keep it that way as long as I can.

When we were kids, we read The Sporting News and National Geographic every night.

Here, I'll say this again:
