UPDATED: OT flyers - seating question
Posted on 6/8/24 at 12:27 pm

You board a plane to take your preferred and reserved AISLE or WINDOW seat. As you prepare to sit, the nice gentleman in the middle seat asks if you will swap with his wife two rows back so they can sit together.
She is also in the MIDDLE seat.
What does the OT do?
Does flight length matter?
This just happened to me and I want to see how I turned out. Will update after the OT rules on the subject.
UPDATE. I am sitting in my aisle seat. Dude is next to me fuming and shooting me side glances. He asked and as soon as I saw she was in a middle seat too I said "sorry but I am a pretty big guy and the middle seat isn't comfortable for me." He shot back "it's only a 80 minute flight" (which pissed me off a bit) and I said "exactly, she should be OK for that short period. I was a little surprised the OT sided with me on this.

I always say yes because I am a pushover, but the reality is that they should have booked tickets together and nobody should feel obligated to switch.

I'm not giving up my window seat for a middle. They should've paid for Main if it mattered that much to them

Flight attendants usually chew their arse for that. Aisle and window are more expensive.

Not giving up my aisle seat for a middle seat due to someone else's lack of planning. Don't try to make your problem my problem.

No trade for a middle seat. Not my fault they bought basic economy seats.
I will trade for another seat in same position, same legroom.

Ask him to trade with his wife so she can sit next to me. Obviously he's a fricking douche for not preparing.

Trade for a window or aisle, but not middle. See if they'll buy you a drink or two during the flight in exchange?

this is quite the dilemma, unfortunately without pics of the wife's tits we are unable to render an opinion at this time

Lie and say "I'm sorry I have bad flight anxiety and need to sit window/aisle or I'll panic" because I'm not good at being a dick to someone's face

Hour and a half or less I'd probably do it. Anything longer than that is a hard no.
The age of the couple would probably play a factor too. I'd be nicer to an elderly couple.

I would explain how I paid extra for my seat selection, so unless he wants to Venmo me $50 real quick, my arse ain’t moving.

I would say no. Their failure to book seats together is their problem not mine.

I'd probably move for a kid and parent to sit together but not adults.
Either;
A) short flight and who cares if 2 grown adults are separated for a bit. ( I may be doing a good deed. Maybe whomever booked it just wants a few moments of space but cant admit it.)
B) long flight and I need to be able to stretch legs in aisle or get up occasionally.

Hell no. Years ago I was on a regional jet…it may have actually been a turboprop, I was on the exit row and the guy next to me asked if I would switch with his wife who was two rows back. I declined, and of course dude got pissy, so I yelled at the guy sitting next to the guys wife and asked if he wanted to swap with the guy next to me so he could sit with his wife. My seatmate told the guy it wasn’t necessary and the FA walked by and smiled at me holding back a laugh.

First question you always ask is what seat is she in aka aisle
When they say middle you just say that's a no for me dog
Their poor planning doesn't need to turn into your misery

Nope, I have a bad knee that I need to straighten out..so I choose right side aisle only. I would never book a flight if there were only 2 middle seats and sitting apart so that’s their fault. My response would be a quick no thank you and then back to my earbuds

Screw them. They paid for the cheapest ticket they could buy. It doesn’t guarantee they will be seated together. If they wanted to sit together they should have shelled out the extra. Also if it’s a kid, they put an adult in the party together with the child.
