Edit: but really, this is becoming a daily occurence. New Orleans is getting to the point where it's beyond repair. At least in my lifetime
It's not close to beyond repair. It is however beyond repair with the current administration choking off the life of the police. You have a depleted police force working their arse off and had their detail money taken away. They have zero motivation and all the good cops who are eligible retired.

Won't be long and the State Department will be issuing a travel ban for New Orleans.
They release US travel advisories to some countries with lower crime rates than NOLA.

you have to remember about those crime numbers, many years the worst cities wouldn't give their numbers.
While others like St.Louis, Detroit, etc did, because they got federal money for doing it.
But because Illanoy is flat fricking broke, they are reporting some of the numbers. They try to mislabel a lot of crimes as petty, misdemeanors, when they are violent crimes, w/no deaths or injuries.
Best part was, Chicago, Liberal asshats would always make fun of other cities crime numbers, while theirs, hidden, were 20X worse than all of them combined.

Everyone chill out, the murder rate isn't above the record year in 1996. Everything's cool
FYI, murders have fallen while shooting victims have risen due to advances in the medical field. A 20 year old murder rate is such a poor comparison

Yeah, I don't get why people say everything is cool because we haven't reached historical peak crime levels

Such a lovely place
I read on an almost daily basis about all the terrible things that occur in NOLA, and I think "nope, I'm done with that city."
Then I happen across things like A Football Life: Steve Gleason, which I actually did randomly come across and am watching right now, and I think "God it really is a special place."
No place in the world evokes so much love and so much disgust as New Orleans does. For me, anyway.

there were 421 murders in New Orleans in 1994 according to this 1995 Los Angeles Times article
that's just murders... doesn't take into account shootings where the victim survived
1990: 304
1991: 345
1992: 279
1993: 395
1994: 424
1995: 363
1996: 351
1997: 267
1998: 230
1999: 158
2000: 204
2001: 213
2002: 258
2003: 274
2004: 264
2005: No official record
2006: 162
2007: 209
2008: 179
2009: 174
2010: 175
2011: 200
2012: 193
2013: 156
2014: 150
2015: 164
2016: 175
2017: 80
There was 100-150k more residents in 1990(depending on which data set you look at
So, 1990 345/500,000 is 1 murder for every 1,449 residents
2017 trending at 225-250ish(the summer months have the higher murder numbers, it is linear like yall are trending it) 225/390,000 is 1 murder for every 1,733 residents.
So we are getting back to the 90s level bloodbath

When you realize being a certain demographic keeps you safe, you realize the city isn't that bad.
BR area is still suffering from things like 5am "massage appointments" gone wrong for white people in College.
